Book Description

February 1, 2002
After a startling revelation led "Sprat" Nicholls to break off with her childhood sweetheart, Denzil Vargo, and quarrel with her family, she was determined to get as far away from her native Cornwall as possible -- and London, three hundred miles from home, seemed like a pretty good start.

For a time, the capital provides some amusing diversions, including a new suffragette acquaintance and the startling appearance of Tom Courtney, Denzil's nemesis. But the stifling atmosphere of the city streets soon has Sprat longing for the fresh, peaceful cliffs of her home, for the open arms of her forgiving parents -- and for the bewildered Denzil, who has no idea at all why he and Sprat can never be together . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Once again Aitken transports readers to the Cornish village of Penvarris. When readers visited last, Sprat Nicholls had fled after the revelation of a secret that drove a wedge between her and her family and friends. It's still 1911; the suffragist movement is underway, and Sprat turns up in London running errands for her employer. Denzil is still working for a shipping company back in Penvarris, living in his employer's house and trying to be a friend to the boss' daughter. It's a very precarious situation: one wrong move and he's either married or loses his job. In fact, both Sprat and Denzil are trying to get on with their lives without much success. Every time it looks like they've either succeeded in forgetting about one another or the misunderstandings surrounding the revelation of the secret are about to be solved, Denzil's nemesis, Tom Courtney, steps in to ruin any headway made. A sweet and simple tale in which early-twentieth-century England comes alive. Maria Hatton
