4.0 out of 5 stars Only Toriphiles will appreciate this CD single
This CD single contains only two songs, one of which is the standard album version, so I cannot give it five stars. Your average listener would probably not be able to justify buying this for one song only; for Toriphiles like myself, though, this is a 5-star item because it features a live version of one of Tori's best songs. Heck, I'd buy it just for the picture on...

2.0 out of 5 stars Great cause, but...
Musically, not really worth the price. One track we all have already, and the other-- well, it's Tori at her most wistful. While it is a bit interesting to hear her completely dismantle "Silent All These Years," it won't leave your shelf again after you've heard it a few times. If your collection demands this recording, get it, but if it's real insight...

This CD single contains only two songs, one of which is the standard album version, so I cannot give it five stars. Your average listener would probably not be able to justify buying this for one song only; for Toriphiles like myself, though, this is a 5-star item because it features a live version of one of Tori's best songs. Heck, I'd buy it just for the picture on the front, but that's just me. As I said, the first track is the regular version of Silent All These Years from Tori's Little Earthquakes album, so don't go thinking it is some kind of special version or remix. As for the live version of the song, it's a little different than I expected. Tori really slows down the pace of it, pausing at odd intervals in her customary way--it makes for a more personal, reflective, and sadder version of the song. It's beautiful, but I fear that only Toriphiles will be truly satisfied with it. If you don't know what EWF stands for, this CD single is probably not for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful song, June 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Silent All These Years (Audio CD)
"Silent All These Years" is a classic Tori song, simple yet deep and far-reaching with its message. I consider it one of the best songs off Little Earthquakes, and it's always a joy to listen to. The live version on this single is amazing, surpassing the studio version, with its slower pace and stronger emotion.

4.0 out of 5 stars A re-release to promote a very worthy cause., January 15, 2005

This is the 1996 re-release of one of Amos's career-defining songs about self-awareness and the boxed in feeling associated with rape victims - "Silent All These Years." This song was given a re-release to raise awareness for Amos's organization, the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (R.A.I.N.N.). The standout title track is the untouched version from her 1991/92 solo debut album "Little Earthquakes." The second track is a live version of the song from her R.A.I.N.N. benefit concert in 1996.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, technically nothing new... but this is classic, September 26, 1999

"Silent All These Years" is beautiful, excellently written and performed. While I must agree with lighter176 about how its rather under-tracked... I think its a great song. With that being the case, why not take the money you were going to spend on it, combine it with some more and buy "Little Earthquakes", one Tori's finest LP's, and the album this track appears on. If this was your introduction to Tori Amos and you were only planning to get this one single, I guarantee that "L.E." is unmatched with quality.

Go ahead, you know you want to hear the live version of "Silent"....and while a couple other songs on the CD would have helped justify the price, monies from its sale go toward the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network.

While it is a bit interesting to hear her completely dismantle "Silent All These Years," it won't leave your shelf again after you've heard it a few times. If your collection demands this recording, get it, but if it's real insight into her soul and her music that you want, you'd do better to put your money towards the price of a concert ticket, or a single with songs you haven't heard her do.

Silent All These years was my first Tori. It was life-changing, and remains so. This is not the strongest version of it, but it's still worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love it, October 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Silent All These Years (Audio CD)
This is one of Tori's best songs, and off her second cd, "little earthquakes" This song is really emotionaly charged. This single was made to help Rainn - Rape , Abuse & Incest national network. But don't worry The song is not about how she was "abused" It is truely a wonderful song and my favorite song she sings. If you like Tori You will love this!!! Enjoy.
