Book Description

May 1, 2006
From the banks of Texas's Buffalo Bayou to the blue waters of Hawaii, this powerful novel from acclaimed author Anita Bunkley tells the story of one resilient woman's fight to save a family legacy--and create a future for herself and her daughter. . .

When tropical storm Allison hits Houston's historic black community, it nearly wipes out Camille and Max Granville's hard-earned home and restaurant, Vendora. But it is just a foreshadowing of the disasters to come. Without flood insurance, the Granvilles' bills pile up, while their savings dwindle. Desperate to save Vendora and pay their daughter Jaiden's college tuition, Max takes a risk that involves turning over control of Vendora to a slick Los Angeles businessman with a shady past. Miraculously, the move pays off. Once again, the Granvilles' future looks bright--until a celebratory cruise turns tragic.

When a fire on board separates the couple and takes Max's life, it rests with a grieving Camille to regain Vendora--and deal with a rebellious daughter who blames her for her father's death. Yet just when all seems lost, astonishing information about Max's last act surfaces from the depths of the catastrophe. The details of what happened in Max's final moments could change everything for Camille, for Jaiden, and for Vendora--if Camille can find out exactly what happened and how. But Camille's good fortune may mean someone else's ruin. Someone desperate enough to do anything to stop her from getting to the truth. . .

From Booklist

Maxwell Granville and his wife of 21 years, Camille, own Vendora, his family home turned supper club in Houston. When a storm damages the mansion, they are forced to seek an investor. Davis Kepler is an ex-con turned businessman, compulsive gambler, and investor in the Los Angeles wine and cigar bar Romero's. Davis is also dating the famous actress Lara Stanton, who wants to get married. Davis' partner, Reet, piques his interest in the supper club as a "place worth saving." When Reet refuses Davis' attempt to buy more ownership in Romero's, Davis ventures out on his own and contacts Max. Davis' investment puts Vendora back in business stronger than before. After months of hard work, Davis, Lara, Max, and Camille take a vacation on a luxury cruise to Hawaii. Davis spends his vacation ignoring Lara and stacking up a $25,000 loss in the casino, and Max ends up covering his debt to reclaim full ownership of Vendora. A novel entertaining to follow through all its twists and turns. Lillian Lewis

4.0 out of 5 stars It's All A Gamble, June 18, 2007
This review is from: Silent Wager (Paperback)
Anita Bunkley tells the story of Max and Camille Granville in her novel, Silent Wager. Max and Camille experience a devastating tropical storm that severely damages their supper club, Vendora. The flood from the storm almost destroys the club. Max struggles to pay the bills and his daughter Jaiden's tuition. He tries to gamble to come up with the money. He finds out that gambling is not enough. He keeps the money problems a secret from Camille and Jaiden. Camille finds out when she receives a call from the insurance company. Max has to look for investors and gains a partner that just may have different plans. Business is going good so they all decide to go on a cruise. Things become tragic on the cruise and just may change all of their lives.

Silent Wager is an entertaining novel. This book started off a little slow, but after reading the first couple of chapters it held my attention until the end. This read was well-written and the characters were well developed. I recommend this book to others looking for a read with mystery and intrigue. Although this is my first time reading Ms. Bunkley's work, it will definitely not be my last.
