After the first time I listened to this album, all I could say was "Wow!" Amorphis is definitely back on top of their game with "Silent Waters." Not that I feel they have ever released a bad album; in the ten years that I have been listening to them, they have consistently been one of my favorite bands, through all of their musical changes. However, with new vocalist Tomi Joutsen and a return to their roots in the folklore of the Finnish epics The Kanteletar and The Kalevala, this is truly an amazing album, in the vein of "Elegy" and "Tales From The Thousand Lakes." Following on the heels of last year's incredible "Eclipse," this is the story of Lemminkainen from The Kalevala, who embarks on a hero's journey and literally goes to hell and back; the entire cycle of poems (English translation) that comprises this story can be read on Amorphis' official website. While every song on this album is excellent, and obviously are meant to be taken as a whole in order to tell the story, "Weaving the Incantation," "Towards and Against," "The White Swan" and "Black River" are my personal favorites; the return to contrasting clean and guttural vocals being one of the main reasons. Basically, buy this album as soon as possible and you will not be disappointed! On a side note, one of the most frustrating things with new albums today is that the foreign release has all sorts of extra stuff, while the extra songs are not made available in the USA until months later, usually on a "special" edition, which just means buying the same album twice. Thank you, Amorphis, for making a bonus track standard on the last two US releases!

I've never been a big Amorphis fan and have, in the past, decided against purchasing their albums. I never thought their music bad, mind you, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. But this album has completely changed my view of this band. Melodic, a great mix of brutal vocals with beautiful clean vocals, and fantastic songwriting, this album hooked me in with the opening riff and I was kept fast, throughout. The combination of songs that are wonderfully beautiful, acoustic and often folk driven, with others that are straight up metal is one that Amorphis use masterfully, on this album. Simply stunning!

Again..............Well the return to form album was Eclipse and this sees them experimenting with that sound again..This seems alot more natural this time around...As strong as ever...Up there with Elegy, Tales and Eclipse

This latest release is along the lines of their previous release,which means it's excellent.If you like your music with heavy bass sounds,and with depth, this is for you.I think that Amorphis have the vocals with just the right balance re growls and intelligibility.It sure beats the dumbed/watered down fare emanating from the likes of Sirenia and others these days.With this album and their previous one[Eclipse]the cd finishes and you're wishing for another couple of tunes to play.That always is the litmus test for a good album.As another reviewer said,this is a very underrated band.Who else makes this type of music this good?

so far i remember I heard songs of Amorphis before but what I dont remember is why I didnt like this band or why I didnt start listening to this. I just suddenly bought this album. It was my first Amorphis cd and was more than enough to make me put the name 'Amorphis' in my 5 most favorite artists list! I am just incredibly in love with the songs...the whole album full of creative musical thoughts. Well just ordered Eclipse too and right now also checking out 2 more albums if I am gonna buy.
Tomi certainly has a God-gifted voice, he's the best vocal for Amorphis.

What a relief. I've unfortunately given up on In Flames, but Amorphis is back with a vengeance. The songs are doomy, inspired, and beautifull. Thank you Amorphis!!!

Everything a metal head would love. Heavy, Thought-provoking, Well thought-out songs. Amorphis, Love them or not have always left you with something to think about. This record is no different. Seems to be a bit more on the "attack" This time. If the last couple didn't sit well this one should set the pace for you again.

I love the art that is Amorphis. 5 stars

This is the album, IMO, that Amorphis was born to create musically. Here on this record, Amorphis is in their prime I would say. I'm sure many will disagree, but that's what I feel. It's all here: the epic and sweeping folk melodies, the haunting guitar and piano lines, clean vocals and harmonies counterbalanced with the harsh growling. "Towards and Against" is the perfect song to display this bands talent and sound. Tomi's vocal fluorish at the end of this song had my daughter hit repeat over and over to enjoy the grand finale. Really, the entire album is filled with musical beauty. The sad part is that Amorphis hasn't changed much musically for the next two albums. They are getting stagnant nowadays, but this album still has that palpable urgency of a band hammering the anvil to forge a masterpiece.

Love this band and is a great cd. It was delivered fast and wasn't damaged at all.

a perfect example of new age gothic metal, girpping deep rifts, dark undertones, a cross between old paradise lost and new disturbed, great harmonies. listen to it.
