MY NAME IS MERRI WALTERS. I’M TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS OLD. TWO YEARS AGO, I SUDDENLY WENT DEAF

My teaching career ended and my fiancé walked out. I survived—and learned to lip-read. So here I am, two years later, starting my new life as a cold-case file clerk turned undercover agent for the police. My task: Infiltrate the mansion of a ruthless crime boss and read his deadly plans off his lips.

Detective Steven Barlow, a tough cop who’s convinced I’m on a suicide mission. And in a way, he’s right—because if I’m caught, I’ll be dead without ever hearing the bad guys coming

5.0 out of 5 stars More a fine police procedural than a romance, March 5, 2005
This review is from: Silent Weapon (Silhouette Bombshell) (Mass Market Paperback)
Two years ago Merri Walters was an elementary school teacher, but suffered total loss of hearing from an illness. The Nashville Police Department hired her as an archivist filing cold and closed cases. She comes across a misfiled folder and after looking at details obviously missed by the cops on the case and her predecessor decides to solve the case, but once she has the proof she does not turn to her family of police and fire officers; she asks Homicide Detective Steve Barlow to complete the bust, which he does.

The brass is impressed with how well the deaf civilian performer and decide she is perfect for an undercover assignment to catch a much bigger fish than Sawyer who she just nabbed with Barlow's assistance. Steve is heatedly opposed to her doing this because he insists she is untrained and has a handicap. He hides that he is attracted to her and worries for her safety. However, Merri has to prove her worth especially to herself and accepts the opportunity though that places her in danger.

More a police procedural than a romance, SILENT WEAPON is a fine tale starring a heroine who overcomes her recent physical handicap by being all she can be. Merri is a terrific lead protagonist and Steve is her ideal counterpoint. The undercover work is handled quite nicely although the romance between the pair is rightfully kept on the backburner (lovemaking and atheism are not common in foxholes). Debra Webb weaves a solid thriller that hopefully will star the Homicide Detective and the detailed oriented archivist in a future story perhaps with a wee bit more romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars MOST EXCELLENT POLICE STORY!, May 13, 2005

A most excellently written story - but I get so tired of females that have something to prove, especially to themselves.

Merri Walters is a few months shy of 30 and has lost her hearing, she seems to have adjusted to the loss but does not like being cossetted by her family.

She has started a new career as a cold-case file clerk and getting a little bored. It seems that she is looking for a little excitement. And latches onto a case that was misfiled and unsolved by an ace detective, Steven Barlow.

Steven Barlow did a lot of gut instinct solving of cases but that does not give enough evidence for a prosecutor to go to court with.

Merri's sister-in-law, Sarah [married to Michael Walters] worked for Chief Nathan Kent, chief of detectives. Chief Adcock, the chief of Homicide had it in for Barlow and wanted to get rid of him [off the force].

Merri also has a problem with her self-image as her fiance left her [figuratively at the altar] when she lost her hearing and she believes she has only passable good looks.

Now the Police are after Luther Hammond and his bodyguards, Conrad Mason, a blonde hunk and Vargas [one dangerous dude].

They controled all the illigal gotten gains around Nashville and were unproven killers.

The most disgusting part of the story is Marri's attitude to sex. Her hormones screwed up her concentration of her undercover job. Two lovers in college, a physical attraction to Mason and definitely a developing attraction to thirty five year old Steven Barlow [he should run for his life]. What a twit!

Even so - A most excellently written story - goodly paced and a wild outcome! Hard to put down. [Where are our self-assured women who can get what they want without being overly aggressive]

Definitely Recommend -----------
