3.0 out of 5 stars Two enjoyable stories in this collection, November 17, 2007

From the back cover:

HOME FOR CHRISTMAS by Nora Roberts
After years of world travel, prizewinning reporter Jason Law was back in Quiet Valley, New Hampshire, with the most difficult assignment he'd ever faced: winning back Faith, the woman he'd loved then left ten years before. Jason had found that home was where the heart is, and Faith held his.

LET IS SNOW by Debbie Macomber
Snowbound after a blizzard delayed their flight home for the holiday, Shelly soon found that meeting Slade Garner changed the course of her life. With a smile Slade was able to make her heart soar--and she hoped the trip would never end.

STARBRIGHT by Maura Seger
Mollie Williams returned to the small Vermont town that her family had founded, looking for the peace and serenity of the holiday season. Instead, she found the turmoil that went with Padraic Delaney, her ex-husband, who was waiting for her with open arms and a loving heart.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE by Tracy Sinclair
The Blake family Christmas party was based on goodwill and trust. Did that trust extend to the handsome stranger who'd mysteriously appeared on Christy's snow-covered front porch? Swept up in the spirit of the season, Christy soon found that she'd given away the greatest gift of all--her heart.

And my review:

I expected HOME FOR CHRISTMAS to be really good. After all, it's written by Nora Roberts, one of the biggest names in fiction today. But this story failed to touch my emotions. I never really felt the sorrow for the love lost between Faith and Jason. Maybe part of the reason was because it felt as if their relationship was more of her hero-worshiping him than true love. I also didn't really like the way he almost expected to be able to come waltzing back into the heroine's life after leaving her ten years ago. Two stars.

LET IT SNOW was a sweet, quick read, in keeping with this author's style. This story was something to put you in the holiday mood; if you want a cute escapist read, this will satisfy. It's also a PG on the sensuality, if that appeals to you. It's not a story that will stay with you for long, but still worth reading. Four stars.

STARBRIGHT was my favorite of this collection. Though I'm not a big fan of Maura Seger, I thought that this story was very well done. The problems between hero and heroine were more than just big misunderstandings; they were real issues. Difficult to solve well in just 100 page, but this author managed beautifully. Really, my only complaint with this one was that it was much too short. Four stars.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE was way too rushed for my taste. The hero and heroine meet, and the next thing you know, they're making out and he's asking if she's a virgin. Woah! Talk about rushing things. Throwing the characters into bed does not magically equal romance. I admit, I'm picky, but I need more than just hormones to cheer a couple on. Two stars.

Half the stories were good. That's pretty much on par for a romance anthology. All of these stories have since been reissued in other collections or on their own, if you want to pick and choose. I've included links here:

HOME FOR CHRISTMAS is found in The Gift: Home For Christmas\All I Want For Christmas\Gabriel's Angel, and The Gift: Home for Christmas / All I Want for Christmas
