Editorial Reviews

Review

"The editors have succeeded in putting together a wide-ranging monograph on developments in many of the most important, although clearly not all, areas of silicon chemistry during the last few years."

Gerald Linti, Anorganisch-Chemisches Institut, Universität Heidelberg
Angewandte Chemie + IE 2004 - 116/23

4.0 out of 5 stars many practical uses, July 5, 2006
This review is from: Silicon Chemistry: From the Atom to Extended Systems (Hardcover)
The book gives a good indication of the crucial importance that silicon has in our technological society. Yet, even after 40 years of being the main semiconductor used in computers, there is still much ongoing research on it.

The papers in the book span diverse topics. Some are on the reactivity of SiO2 when deposited on various substrates. These may have relevance to semiconductor fabrication, where the behaviour of Si and SiO2 during deposition is important.

Other papers discuss the photoluminescence of silicon compounds. In part because if we can integrate photonics with silicon fabrication, this might be cheaper than trying to deal with the GaAs compounds.

Another major topic relates to using silicon, either in crystalline or amorphous forms, for solar cells. Very germane due to rising energy costs.
