USB thumb/flash drives are like the mystery candy in a box of chocolates. You never really know how one is going to perform until you buy and test it out. Even units within the same model from the same maker can vary.

I have two PNY Micro Swivel Attaché 4 GB USB 2.0 flash drives, one of which is fairly average as far as write speeds, but tends to be peppier (18-20 mb/sec) in read speed. The other gets sad write speeds and less than average read speeds. But what I really liked about those was the sturdiness of construction, and the tiny form factor. I wore them on my ID, without extra weight, and no one knew I had one until I used it. They were metal, withstood abuse like few other drives (up to and including the spin cycle on the washer), and are my daily workhorses.

This drive, the Silicon Power Touch 810, I purchased because of it's capacity, physical size, lack of a cap to get lost or get in the way, and the appearance. I lean towards the smallest drives I can find that are still functional as far as handling.

At 1 and 1/8" long by just over 1/2" wide by 3/16" thick, it's not as tiny as the PNY Micro Swivel. It is however extremely light, being mostly plastic, and comes with a permanently attached double strand of thin ball-chain as a lanyard. One con there: How do you attach it to anything... it's a closed loop. The business end extends from the plastic body by pushing up on a grooved button on the bottom face. I don't know that I would subject it to the punishment that I've dealt out to the metal PNY drives. It's so... plastic.

What I was surprised by though was the speed.

I gotta say, I had absolutely no expectations when I ordered it aside from the fact that I expected it to be quite large. Boy was I wrong! This thing is TINY! It is the smallest flash drive I've ever seen and own, and I own more than a handful. For comparison sake, I compared this to my transcend flash drive which measured 6.2cm. This one measured only 2.8cm! Yea its incredibly tiny and even more compact than your usual flash drive.

I really didn't expect much performance out of this lil fella but it also blew me away yet again! I ran some benchmarks using crystaldiskmark and I was left speechless.

Silicon Power 16GB
Read/Write
22.51MB/11.89MB

Transcend 16GB
Read/Write
14.94MB/4.473MB

Dane-Elec 512MB (Really really old, just for kicks)
Read/Write
10.14MB/3.718MB

As you can see by the results its write speed is almost 3 times faster than my transcend! It also comes with their own software called SP-widget(which you have to download from their site). It includes certain things like pc-lock and data encryption among others.

All in all I consider this a pretty good drive for the price, which is also fairly reasonable.

This flash drive not only looks great but is pretty tough too. How tough? It recently took a little trip through the washer and dryer and not only is it a whole lot cleaner :) but still works just as well as when I first got it. Seems to be pretty fast and reasonably priced for a 16GB flash drive. Not bad at all.

Don't be fooled by the chrome paint. This thing is thin and flimsy plastic.

If hung from your key chain, the chrome will start flaking off within a week, and the drive will look absolutely AWFUL, and slightly dangerous with chrome flakes sticking out.

The first one I had worked for a couple weeks, then EVERYTHING on my drive disappeared, and anything else I wrote to it instantly disappeared. With only modest hassle, the company replaced it.

The second one worked for several months, but I did very, very little writing to it after initially filling it up... Recently, when I tried reformatting it and dumping some videos on it, it committed sepuku as well, and now gives me I/O errors on sector 0 and is completely unreadable

The (plastic) bar that held it on my key chain broke with just light usage over a couple months. I was extremely fortunate that I didn't lose it when it fell off, but it's very nearly useless to me without a loop.

Get anything else... Something that is actually metal would be an infinite improvement over this trash. I can recommend this one: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZET)

I'm a film production student and use a USB drive every semester that I can carry with me and tote files around with. I ordered this one because it was red and looked fashionable compared to others I've owned. When it arrived I truly fell in love with it, so much so that I ordered an extra one in blue for a friend!

After using it for A WEEK I noticed one day that the whole thing was gone off of my keyring. I was SO sad and figured it may have randomly fallen off when taking it out of my jean pocket, so I ordered another one.

A WEEK after owning the second red one I was having lunch and it just feel off of the chain! Apparently the chain can get torn pretty easily, and with this second one the little ring that holds the jeweled top to the chain pulled apart slightly and allowed the usb portion to just fall off. I squeezed the ring back together but then noticed two days later that the ring was bent again and I lost the USB drive once more.

Now I'm left with a blue one that I can't take anywhere with me since it could become lost. I've owned several keyring usb drives in my school years, and this is the ONLY brand that has ever fallen off... EVER. It's disappointing because the read speeds ARE quicker than average, but what good is that if the chain breaks easy and the ring that holds it to the chain bends apart easy? Losing school related data is a serious bummer, and one that simply can't be tolerated in a USB drive.
