Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Silk paper–making takes the beautiful individual fibers of silk, adds a suitable adhesive, and creates a lovely new material. The richness of the fibers gives the papers a unique and luxurious texture that encourages a wide variety of applications. Following an introduction to the craft and the materials needed to pursue it, Silk Paper explores the marvelous range of silk fibers available, then shows you how to turn them into sheets of “paper.” Four chapters of projects offer stunning ideas on how the silk papers can be used. Lavish color photos, along with clear, sequential instructions, make this book an ideal starting point for this new and exciting craft.

Format: Spiral-bound Verified Purchase
I purchased Silk Paper by Valerie Goodbury used, very inexpensively. When there are a lot of cheap copies...well, I didn't expect much. It was a pleasant surprise to find quite a bit of depth here - historical information (less important than the practical, but nice to know); types of silk fibers AND how to use each of them in silk papermaking (especially to achieve variations in texture); and the uses of several types of mediums. Other books I own teach one or another method as "the" way to construct the fiber sheets, but Ms. Goodbury presents numerous alternatives.

Additionally, there are project ideas for using the silk paper sheets and for making three-dimensional objects that go beyond just a bowl. Perhaps they won't blow you away, but they should start you thinking about possibilities.

Worth a mention: the Glossary is helpful, the pictures are pretty good, and the enclosed spiral binding makes for easy reading of an instructional book.

If you are interested in making silk paper, this book will be a valuable reference.
