5.0 out of 5 stars good glimpse of lesser-known musical traditions of China, August 21, 2007

This review is from: Silk Road 10: Journey Into Music - South [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Good footage and cimematography. Narration is in English. First part of the video has examples of Uighur music. Second part shows ancient Buddhist ruins and caves, including a reliquary that has pictures of long-ago Buddhist musicians. Paintings inside a cave show "angels" playing instruments which are still used in Japan. The third part show a performance by a professional touring ensemble (music and dance). English subtitles for the lyrics appear briefly on screen, and a backstage visit/interview with the performers is included (doing music research). Also included is a nice duet in a courtyard (English lyrics in subtitles), followed by more old paintings of musicians in a mural (close-ups are shown and their relation to Japanese instruments pointed out). The show ends with musical scenes from a Uighur wedding, followed by more musical art and live performances. All in all, a good glimpse into some musical traditions not well-known outside the area. There's also stunning photography of landscapes, both arial and close-ups.
