5.0 out of 5 stars Great Journey for Armchair Silk Road Travelers, July 22, 2001

This review is from: The Silk Road II (6pc) (Coll Box) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
With this latest series, NHK's Silk Road team ventures beyond China and Mongolia to explore the western reaches of the Silk Road, eventually arriving in historic old Rome. En route the team itself becomes part of the story as, for example, they struggle to cross the Kara Kum desert of Turkmenistan (outside the medieval city of Khiva), experiencing breakdowns, getting lost and running out of water along the way. In Central Asia they discover villagers still speaking medieval Sogdian and such is their determination that they even manage to communicate with them, despite having to go through three translators for every question and answer (Sogdian - Tadzhik - Russian - Japanese). Other highlights include a descent into the famous Persian irrigation karez, a cameo by the Dalai Lhama and a memorable camel caravan from Dura Europos to Palmyra. Camera work even veers into nature documentary including a rather amusing dung beetle (scarab). Impressively the team spares no expense or effort in spading up the most interesting historical features of today's Silk Road regions. As this journey would be extremely costly and hard to arrange for the modern traveler, their efforts will be greatly appreciated by the many of fans of the Silk Road's history and culture. One only wishes it were possible while watching to partake in the many interesting delicacies such as the freshly-baked nan bread so enticingly depicted.

In this series there are now 3 approximately 50-minute episodes per video, as follows:

1.Across the Pamir ; The King's Road ; Legendary Ladack

2.Xuang Zang's travels in India ; The Scorching Sun and the Southern Road of Iran ; In Search of Wisdom

3.Beyond Baghdad ; The Road Vanished into a Lake ; Across the Steppes

4.The Sky Horses of Davar ; The Soghdian Merchants ; The Glory of Samarkand

5.Across the Karakum Desert ; The Other Silk Road ; The Caravans Move West

6.The Horsemen of Turkey ; The Silk City at the Edge of Asia ; All Roads Lead to Rome

This is a truly amazing series on the Silk Road. Don't miss it. Just one pieces of advice. Don't try to watch all 18 of them at once!
