As a recently divorced woman in my mid 30's, I picked this book up in wonderment and interest in the new sexual millenium. As a recently divorced woman in my mid 30's, I picked this book up in wonderment and interest in the new sexual millenium. After reading Silk Sheets, I gained a level of respect for the lesbian and gay community. I can't imagine what it must be like to feel that being yourself is not acceptable. This book will definitely grab your emotions. As I read this book I realized that my having thoughts of lesbianism is and can be quite normal. Silk Sheets gives you a chance to see through the eyes of Tanya, as she goes through painful changes to learn and understand that being yourself is more important than allowing those around you to dictate who you are. The lessons in this novel are unlimited, not to mention the sexuality in this book is so hot and steamy, you can't help but be aroused! It will surely bring out that little secret within. I highly recommend this book so that we are all able to see alternate lifestyles through a clear lense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Better than I thought it would be!!, August 11, 2002

I was impressed with this author's ability to write a fabulous story without the wordiness. I finished the book in one day! This book opened my eyes to a whole new perspective about the lesbian lifestyle. I'm tired of the games that men play and according to this book, if I'm tired of their BS,I should give a woman a try. I just might do that!

1.0 out of 5 stars Silk Sheets, September 21, 2003

I was looking forward to getting this book after reading the reviews...too bad I didn't choose another. I found the way it was written choppy making it hard to read (or hold an interest) The dialogue didn't seem to have much effort behind it; childish almost.
I finished the book, but only because I had nothing better to do while riding the subway.
If you want to take a chance because of the other reviews, go for it- to each their own- good luck!

When read the reviews about Silk Sheets, I bought the book with anticipation. I was expecting an intelligent novel about the lesbian lifestyle with a little erotica thrown in for fun. Now what I got was a trite, unorganized novel. I applaud James D. Jackson for his effort to create a story about alternate lifestyles, but the endeavor was lost between the grammatical errors and inconsistencies. The characterizations could have been a lot better; adding names to each chapter so we don't get confused as to who is speaking would help. And this novel really does nothing to help the perceptions of lesbians. In fact, this book was somewhat demeaning. Does Donna's mother, the so-called "sociologist," really have to be held as a genius when her theory of homosexuality is so incorrect? I can't believe that an educated woman would spout garbage like that; every lesbian has not been molested, raped or had a bad experience with men. The bad thing about this book is that people who don't know better will buy into this stereotype. Please don't believe the hype. Try reading more realistic novels like "Loving Her" by Ann Shockley or "Water in a Broken Glass" by Odessa Rose. You'll get a lot more out of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Erotica, May 8, 2003

"redbear79" (Mt. Shasta, CA) - See all my reviews

Is this erotica? I highly doubt it. It's the story of a poor, black, teenager in the south; her family relationships and those of her friends. The writing is choppy, and the writer spends way too much time with details that do not add to the story. Who wants a paragraph on cleaning your teeth? The main character, Tanya, thinks and talks like a twenty-something black man! She's supposed to be a teen and female! From a cultural standpoint,it's revealing. As far as erotica, don't waste your money.

Being a mother of two small children and stuggling with my sexuality,I recommend this book to anyone seeking a clear understanding of lesbianism. James Jackson hits the nail on the head with respect to the lesbian coming out process, as well as describing intimacy with explicit detail! Once you begin to read this book, you can't put it down. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel!!

5.0 out of 5 stars STEAMY!!!, June 8, 2002
This review is from: Silk Sheets (Paperback)
I absolutely enjoyed reading Silk Sheets from beginning to end. Mr. Jackson's colorful descriptions of his characters and their surroundings captured my attention and held on to it until the very end. Oh, and I have to mention the sex scenes!! The steamy sex scenes leave nothing to the imagination and left me blushing!! James Jackson captures the element of a lifestyle none to many have explored with style and charm and I look forward to reading his other works. I will definitely keep my eye open for his next book. I hope it will be soon!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Sheets Left Me Cold -- 2.5 stars, March 22, 2006
This review is from: Silk Sheets (Paperback)
Though silk is one of the world's most luxurious fabrics, you wouldn't know it by these SILK SHEETS, James D. Jackson's story about a woman's sexual awakening. While Sheets isn't a total disaster, the story didn't keep me warm.

The tale involves three points of view: Tanya, the naïve protagonist who discovers her Silk Sheets by James D. Jackson sexuality later in life; Charlene, the woman with a little more lesbian experience under her belt; and William, the man who surprises them all in the end.

When Silk Sheets warms up, Tanya is an over-achieving high school student, destined to make something of herself and escape from the derelict neighborhood in which she grew up. Tanya's neighbor is Charlene, a sexually-charged young lady who gets kicked out her house after her father finds her with woman's head between her legs. Soon after she heads to Clark-Atlanta University, where she begins having an affair with her biology professor.

It's when that relationship takes a wrong turn that Charlene runs into Tanya, now a student at Howard University. They share a sultry night after, one that leads Tanya in questioning whom she is. She gets over her fear, and the two move in together after graduation.

William comes into play awkwardly as a blast from Charlene's scandalous past, now about to get married to Tanya's best friend, Donna.

Jackson creates a couple love scenes that will ruffle your Sheets, but as a whole, the story just didn't do it for me. He doesn't effectively capture the essence of a black lesbian, and it shows as the novel progresses; when Tanya seeks advice from Donna's mother, a sociologist, she has some outlandish thoughts about homosexuality that don't make much sense. The plot was also jumbled and clunky, and the characters came out of place, with no transition as to who is speaking.

Silk Sheets may be a quick read, but it's one that leaves me cold.

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this read, October 22, 2003
This review is from: Silk Sheets (Paperback)
Different strokes for different folks. Some of the review are way to harsh for this title. The book was good. It wasn't the best I ever read, but it certainly wasn't the worse. I recommend this book to anyone who likes good books!
