About the Author

Agnès Rosenstiehl is the beloved writer and artist of nearly a hundred children's books, many featuring the deceptively simple antics of "Mimi Cracra", Silly Lilly's French alter ego. In 1995, she received the prestigious Grand Prize for Children's Books from the Société des Gens de Lettres. Agnès formally studied literature as well as music, and is married to an eminent mathematician. She lives in a country house with a garden, hidden in the center of Paris. She has four children and fifteen grandchildren.

I love these books. My 5 year old son loves these books. And now my 4 year old niece does as well. Lily is a curious and fun girl with a good imagination.

Silly Lilly in What Will I Be Today by Agnes Rosenthal; Suggested audience: Grades Pre-K - 1st Grade.

This series is definitely designed with the earliest readers in mind. There is little in the way of plot but, instead, there are pleasing illustration coupled with simple sentences. Early readers can have a sense of accomplishment after completing a Silly Lilly book and can begin to master the reading techniques used when reading graphic novels. Silly Lilly's personality and crazy hair-do call to mind some of the Pippi Longstocking stories by Astrid Lindgren. In this Silly Lilly story, the reader spends a week with Lilly as she imagines a different persona to act out each day. As most children do, Lilly believes she can be anything from a City Planner to a Vampire. This book would make a perfect addition to a kindergarten classroom.

Reason for Reading: I was fortunate enough to sample the very first Toon Books and now can't help myself checking out every new one as it's published.

Rosenstiehl's Silly Lilly is a delightful little girl, vibrant, joyful and intelligent. She's always on the go and has a wonderful imagination. Lilly knows the days of the week and every day this week she is going to have a different job. The jobs range from the practical city planner to the creative cook and the plain silly vampire. But she has them all planned out perfectly with an extra special job for Sundays. Rosenstiehl's illustrations are minimalist but every item in the picture has a purpose. Keep your eyes on teddy's expression during then musician sequence and on her apron as she is a cook. These details make the story twice as expressive than the text alone is able to do. The author bio lets us know that Silly Lilly has been around for years in France having all sorts of exploits in French children's picture books, hopefully someday we will get to know her better with English translations of these older works.
