Silly Sally,
By Jelsomina Elsasser (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Silly Sally (Big Book) (Paperback)
The book is cute and short. Is about silly Sally who goes to town walking backwards upsidedown. On her way she meets several animals and Neddy Buttercup who joined her on her way to town. I read this book to my second graders, and afterwards did a lesson on rhythming words, since the story is told in rhythming verses. I also used to book to teach them order, for example who followed Sally first and second and so on. The children loved the illustrations and the fact that they were able to read.

'Silly Sally' is a TERRIFIC read-aloud book,
By Durling Heath "Durling Heath" (Cohoes, NY) - See all my reviews

"It's fun and okay to be silly," is the message that 'Silly Sally' offers to its young audience. And what more does a two or three-year old want to do than be silly?
Both written and brightly illustrated with watercolors by Audrey Wood, 'Silly Sally' is the story, or perhaps more of a poem or a song, of Silly Sally herself who "went to town, walking backwards, upside down." On her journey, Silly Sally meets a pig, a dog, a loon, a sheep, before encountering her equally silly friend, Neddy Buttercup. All of Silly Sally's friends are just as silly, bright, and fun as she is. Upon reaching her destination, the people of the town represented in the last two illustrations are very happy and excited to see that Silly Sally and her entourage have arrived. 'Silly Sally' is a TERRIFIC read-aloud book that young children want to hear over and over again. The message, if there in fact is a message, is that it's just fine to be yourself, silly or otherwise. The quality of the board book edition is good, and weathers hand-downs from one child to the next very well.

This is just a cute, fun book about being silly. My 2 year old loves this book and laughs at the pictures. It's a nice light read, no preaching, with silly pictures. Definately recommend it.

Success reading for the beginning reader,

As a reading specialist I use this book to help develop reading fluency, since this a predictable book the student can predict who or what will happen next by looking at the pictures and looking for rhyming words thereby gaining confidence in his or her reading ability by establishing a flow. I have this book on my shelf for my success reading time for my students. Each class starts out with 15-20 minutes of success reading and the students get to read a previously practiced book to the group and this is one of the most popular books chosen by the students.

Silly Sally is so very well done. My kids received it as a gift and it only took a couple of reads for them to be in love. They memorized the verse and began singing it through the house! What a delight -- even parents will have funn with this one as Silly Sally goes to town....

One of my top 10 Kids books EVER,
By Austin Mama "michelle" (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews

Silly Sally is one of the best written baby/toddler books on the market. It is funny, repetative and witty and it doesn't talk down to kids. My 3 year old has loved this book since she was little. As soon as she could walk, she would turn herself upside-down (head on the floor) along with Sally while I ready the book.
Audrey Wood is one of my favorite children's book authors. Her books are well written and have amazing rythm. I buy this book for all of my friends having first babies. Other people know to get them Goodnight Moon and My Love for You, but not everyone has found Audrey Wood.

My 7 1/2 month old adores this book. The sing song rhyming text amuses her like nothing else (I have memorized the story to tell when she's particularly grumpy). We love Audrey Wood and Silly Sally!

Silly Sally,
By Nancy Distel (Maplewood, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Silly Sally (Red wagon books) (Board book)
I adore this book. It makes me feel the giddy freedom that every child deserves to know. My son loves this book and his interaction with the story has evolved over time. He went from listening to finishing the lines himself to reciting the story by rote! He turns the book around, anticipates the meeting of the characters along the path, and gives me a smile that fills my heart with joy.

The joy and energy expended while reading this book is only matched by my joy as a mother listening to her 6 yr old reading with such delight.

Silly Sally offers rhyming rolled into a cumulative tale à la "This Is the House That Jack Built" not to mention Audrey Wood's own The Napping House, the latter of which I prefer over Silly Sally. For a buttercup, Neddy is a bit of a fruitcake.
This is a short, silly book whose reading experience will be optimized by paying close attention to the objects in the background as Sally approaches town. I don't think many people will find a reason to dislike this book but nor do I expect it to be everyone's favorite. 3.5 stars. Rounding down because it simply isn't a book my kids request. |
