Book Description

"Tilly is not an ordinary goose. She takes her baths in apple juice. She wears a pancake as a hat. She tries to ride the farmer’s cat."

But the barnyard animals complain that she’s too silly. When she stops entertaining her friends with her antics, the farm becomes a quiet and unhappy place. David Slonim’s acrylic, pencil, and ballpoint pen illustrations add to the hilarity in this story about a one-of-a-kind silly goose.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2—Tilly, a goose, bathes in apple juice, wears a pancake as a hat, and likes to tickle frogs. But her ways raise the ire of the other farm animals, who demand that she cease all silliness: "No more naps in Scarecrow pants!," etc. Once she stops, however, they realize that the farm is not as much fun as it used to be. They apologize to Tilly and begin to view her antics with appreciation, sometimes even joining in. The acrylic, pencil, and ballpoint pen illustrations complement the rhyming text and do a nice job of conveying the animals' varying levels of frustration. Some pictures are laugh-out-loud funny, and readers will take delight in viewing Tilly's wacky behavior, such as when she tries to ride the farmer's cat or soaks her feet in mayonnaise. This story will appeal to children who follow the beat of their own drummers, and would work well as a read-aloud.—Beth Cuddy, Seward Elementary School, Auburn, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL BOOK October 5, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Silly Tilly is one of those rare finds in a book. Instead of reading this book, I made up a tune and sing the story and the children in my classroom love the book! Silly Tilly is a MUST have in preschool class, or a K-3 classroom where this book will become an instant favorite!

Good rhyming book. Also good book for beginners learning to read to get started with, very cute book about letting people be who they are and accepting them even if they are different and sometimes silly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real dilly! October 8, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
"Tilly was a silly goose," starts this adorable book by Eileen Spinelli that takes us through all the many things this wacky fowl does. She likes to kiss fish, take baths in apple juice, and sit on birthday cakes annoying the rest of the barnyard with her wild antics. They tell her that she must stop all her nonsense and behave like the rest of the group. Sadly, she complies with their demands. The group soon realize thet her behavior livened up the place, "Hetta Hen remarked, I haven't laughed since-when? - since Tilly chased the garbageman!"

Realizing they were wrong to make Tilly conform, all the animals apologize. Tilly resumes her harmless pranks, and once again entertains the entire barnyard with her shenanigans.

A wonderful tale pf appreciating our friends for who they really are and having the understanding that we shouldn't change them.

Beautiful and richly illustrated by David Slomin. Sweet book for some nice discussions on the meaning of friendship.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Illustrations, But... September 5, 2012
Format:Paperback
Is this book cute---yes! It is amusing and the illustrations are excellent.

It features Tilly, a silly goose, who does all sorts of goofy (and sometimes annoying and even destructive) things to elicit laughs from others. Eventually, the other animals tire of Tilly and shun her until she quits acting obnoxiously. She complies, but then the other animals feel bored and apologize to Tilly for asking her to quit acting up. Tilly begins her hijinks again, "and all the farm is happy again." The end.

My problem with Silly Tilly it is the take-away of the book---which is that is GOOD to act silly (even destructively) so long as it makes others laugh. This might be a fine lesson for an aspiring comedian, but it is not what children on the cusp of going to school should be taught. Kids are copycats, and this book depicts and celebrates a cute character who is an attention-seeking class-clown.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silly Tilly is silly! November 28, 2010
By Tammy
Format:Hardcover
This is a silly rhyming book.

"Tilly is not an ordinary goose. She takes her bath in apple juice. She wears a pancake as a hat. She tries to ride the farmer's cat. She kissed a fish. Imagine that."

When her barnyard friends tell her she's too silly she turns into a sad goose. Her friends miss the old Tilly and talk about how they haven't laughed since she stopped being so silly. The horse apologizes to Tilly and Tilly turns back into her silly self.

5.0 out of 5 stars That silly goose July 14, 2014
By Macan
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Silly Tilly is so cute and still provides a real life lesson. Tilly gets under her friends skin by acting her usual silly way and they tell her she needs to "Knock it off." As you might expect, she does that and then they all miss her goofy ways and they apologize. My Grandkids love to hear the rhyming verses that tell of the antics of this goose. The illustrations are softly done yet depict the emotions of the animals including the Wide-Eyed expressions of the cow, donkey, pig, etc. Very cute book that lets the reader really put some intonation into the story.
