Fire bursts out from within...,
By Jack Wells "Jack Wells" (West Haven, UT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Silver Bullets (Audio CD)
The second single to be lifted from the album La Parade Monstrueuse, "Silver Bullets" is definitely a more standout track than "My Despair". Dark and heavy, with horror elements and driving synths, this is In Strict Confidence in their natural element. Centering on lycanthropy and the usual elements surrounding it (i.e. silver bullets and the full moon), this song always brings The Wolfman to mind, which was the first movie my fiancée and I watched together when we started dating. So aside from being a completely awesome song, it has a certain sentimental value attached to it.
The album opens with a single mix of "Silver Bullets" which shortens the track by roughly a minute, while putting slightly more emphasis on the beat and guitars. While this certainly works for club and radio play, it also pulls the electronics into the background a bit, which gives the song a more rushed feel. Next up is an extended version of "Rain", which originally appeared on the Serpent's Kiss EP. Honestly, this song works far better in its extended form, and is one of the better tracks on this CD. Two remixes of "Silver Bullets" follow, one by X-Fusion and the other by Controlled Fusion. The X-Fusion mix adds spooky reverberating synths, while the Controlled Fusion mix strips the verse and chorus down a bit. They are both good in their own right, but the X-Fusion mix stands out a little more. Following the remixes we have the short exclusive track "No Refuge In The Night". Plodding and atmospheric, with solemn keys and relaxed vocals, this one grows on you with repeated listening. It also works best when playing through a good pair of headphones. Next we have the requisite club mix of "Silver Bullets". The beats come to the forefront here, and the synth and key sequences get rearranged slightly. Outside of a club scene, this mix doesn't have much to offer. Second to last on the CD is "Why Did I Lose My Faith?", which is as close to pop as I have ever heard from ISC. It almost pains me to say it...but I really don't care for this song. I love Antje's voice, and could listen to her read out of the phonebook or sing Justin Bieber (gasp!), but this song really doesn't do much for me. It's just not In Strict Confidence enough for me I guess. And finally we have the extended version of "Silver Bullets". Adding roughly two minutes, you get more head shots, more blood spurts, and more screaming brides. And this is a good thing. The intro has been fleshed out more, as has the middle section, with more guitars and extended sequencing. While the exclusive tracks on "Silver Bullets" aren't quite as good as those from the "My Despair" EP, this is still a pretty solid single with some good remixes. The extended version of "Rain" and the exclusive "No Refuge In the Night" are definitely the highlights. All in all, this is a great addition to the growing ISC library.
