Book Description

March 2006 10 and up5 and upSilver Sequence (Book 2)
Milo, transformed into a luminous silver child, keeps watch over the teeming city of Coldharbour, now filled with children from all over the world. We meet Tanni and Parminder, who lead the frightening Unearthers, children who are virtually human drills. But who is controlling them? Why are they draining Thomas of his beauty? Where is the Roar? And what is the significance of the mud dolls that Jenny makes? In an intense and page-turning story, the destinies of these magical children unfold as battlelines are drawn around them for the biggest fight ever between good and evil.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up–McNish continues his clever blend of science fiction and fantasy. The Silver Child (Carolrhoda, 2005) saw six children drawn by some unknown force to Coldharbour, where they each discovered extraordinary abilities that would help protect them from an approaching danger known as the Roar. Now, children from every corner of the planet are descending on Coldharbour. With Milo–the silver child and one of the original six–protecting the others from the sky in his massive, angel-like form, the remaining five must keep the newcomers from new threats hidden deep in the Earths core. It is through the voices of Thomas, the healer, and Helen, the psychic, that McNishs story truly takes shape. Though the other characters can be a little flat at times, these two continue to move the action forward. For readers looking for something imaginative and distinctive, Silver City will not disappoint.–Lisa Marie Williams, Fairfax County Public Library System, Reston, VA

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. The second title in the Silver Sequence begins with Milo, the winged silver boy who is the size of a city, providing shelter for others as the mysterious, evil Roar draws near. Meanwhile, Thomas the healer; Helen the mind-reader; the insect twins, Freda and Emily; and Walter the giant test their courage, spirit, and abilities against the Unearthers, a group of steel-bodied, hard-hearted beings who want to hamper efforts to free the Protector, the Roar's nemesis. McNish's suspenseful, fast-paced novel immerses readers in an inventive world featuring distinctly drawn characters and a graceful blending of realism and occasionally spooky fantasy. Alternating narratives, mainly Thomas' and Helen's, add depth and suspense to this satisfying follow-up to The Silver Child (2205), which will leave readers eagerly awaiting the next episode. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Different Story, January 16, 2006
By
Biogal (Montclair, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Silver City (Silver Sequence) (Hardcover)
In this second book of the Silver Sequence Cliff McNish continues his bizarre tale of mutated children trying to save the world from the evil "roar". If this sounds strange, wait 'til you read the book! I read this book aloud to my nine- and ten-year-old children and it was a pleasure to find a book that intrigued me as much as it did them. We found the book to be disturbing, weird, fantastic, wonderful, exciting and strange, all at the same time. You won't have ever read a book like this before. I might put a small caution not to give this book to a child that is easily put off or scared by the bizarre (the children mutate into disturbing but necessary forms, for example). I think tweens and teens might be best suited for the subject matter of this book. I felt that my reading it to my children helped mitigate some of the stranger elements that they might have found too disturbing. But if you have an avid reader or one who isn't intrigued by the status quo of children's books, this is an excellent choice! To make sure, perhaps a quick read of the first chapter would help you make up your mind as the book gets quirky very quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!, March 8, 2010
By
Even better than the first book! After reading The Silver Child, I rushed straight to the library to get the Silver City. I was a bit apprehensive because sometimes the first book in a series is the best one, and the quality kind of peters out as the series continues. Not the case with The Silver Sequence! The first book raised many questions in my mind, and the Silver City managed to both answer some of my questions and raise new ones. The book contains a wonderful mixture of excitement, intrigue, mystery, horror (but not too much), and definitely adventure. Cliff McNish is an amazing author whose writing creates a detailed picture of what is happening in the story. I have nothing but praise for this author and his amazing series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, heroic journey, September 10, 2007
This review is from: Silver City (Silver Sequence) (Hardcover)
I loved this book!
McNish is able to build so much tension and so much horror that his characters seem almost myth-like as they attempt their many and varied tasks in seeking to protect their world from a horror-filled end.
My favorite character is Thomas, whose journey in book one to becoming a selfless and stunningly capable leader shows its fruition here. In Silver City, he is a single-minded powerhouse of determination and strength, even when tested to the outer limits of human ability.
I was literally on the edge of my seat, breathless to find out what would happen. In no way did the climax disappoint, nor did Thomas fail to evidence even more growth in the end. And, as Helen says, since Thomas' role in the final task will be even more pivotal, I cannot *wait* to read that book!
