4.0 out of 5 stars Hard edged..tough, April 7, 2005
This review is from: Silver City (Dig) (Audio CD)
This debut by Sarah has a Steve Earle feel to it. It's the recording Maria McKee should have made years ago. Great backing band. Sarah's hard edged tough hard rock country vocals are great. I love it. Alternate Country fans this is for you. We will be seeing her on the cover of No Depression magazine soon. As for the guy who said she can't sing......he must be a Julie Andrews fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning debut!, September 19, 2005

A few months ago I spent a whole weekend on the phone with a tech guy trying to revive my crashed computer and all the time I had music on and the only time he commented at all was when I was playing Sarah. "Who's that you got on? She sounds really cool!" Indeed, this is easily one of the top two or three CDs I've gotten in a long time (Along with Kevin Gordon's 'O come look at the burning'). Sarah rocks out! She reminds me of the comment that Carlene Carter made years ago about putting the 'c*nt back into country'. Well Sarah certainly does that and more. Jesus she is tough! I got to see her live last night at the Old Town School of Folk Music here in Chicago and she just blasted off. She even LOOKED like she could be Carlene's daughter. Towards the end of her set she did a cover of Dylan's Outlaw Blues that was just unbelievable.
This CD is so good it hurts. Sarah Borges is the REAL DEAL. And catch her live if you can... you won't be sorry. 24 hours later and I'm still all shook up.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cool Trisha Yearwood, December 9, 2005
This review is from: Silver City (Dig) (Audio CD)
actually, she's much better than that. Great, steel-guitar-laden, honky-tonk music. If Gram and Emmylou had a baby, SB is a pretty fair approximation of what it would've been like...If artists like Lucinda and Maria McKee appeal to you, this should be right up your alley.

Debut of the year!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Debut Album, May 25, 2007
This review is from: Silver City (Dig) (Audio CD)
This woman has the power!

I ordinarily won't listen to "country" music. Indeed, I usually go out of my way to avoid it. (Okay, okay, I have a bit of a soft spot for Patsy Cline, and I have been known to listen to a little Hank Williams and Johnny Cash once or twice a year, but that's it. I swear.)

But Sarah Borges is. . . Man, she rocks!

She is tough. She is raw. She is passion. And she sings straight from her heart to yours.

She doesn't mess around, and she gives it to you strong.

When I first heard this CD it was like plugging into a high-voltage socket. And it stays that way! All twelve tracks are electric quality and worth repeated listening. In fact, her song Daniel Lee is now the most played song on my MP3 player, even ahead of my favorites: Howlin' Wolf, Jimi Hendrix, and Loreena McKennitt.

In this, her debut album, she sings and plays her guitar like her spirit is on fire. And her backup cast provides powerful support behind her, giving her a strong foundation from which she can, and does, launch her musical spirit.

I called her music "country", but to be honest that's not really correct. Twang-rock or punk-country is probably more on target. But whatever you call it, one thing is for sure: Sarah Borges kicks a**!

A superior album. This CD is worth going out of your way to get your hands on. [It really is worth 4.5 stars, but Amazon won't let me choose 4.5 stars.]

5.0 out of 5 stars Addiction, February 18, 2011

Hot whiskey touched with maple syrup swigged between long draws on Marlboros, Sarah Borges sings to my psyche with words that gladly can't escape. The notes of one song lead to the next like a Mozart opera, telling the story of a woman burdened with responsibility and bad relationships but determined to kick ass and have fun.

Sarah has found the right friends, prolific in musicianship and production and ready to stay up all night in a Nashville honky-tonk to help tell her imagery-laden story. You won't know where the next song and her unrestricted voice will take you.

Crank up "Same Old 45." You'll be joined by Gene Krupa, and your rib cage will blend with your hips and shoulders. What the hell, keep it all cranked, even "Mellow Doubt," because you won't want to miss a note of the seague to "Ring in the Shape of a Heart." Stay around for the blues and rockabilly fusion. This is excellent creativity, and relief from the pap of the everyday.

Can a CD wear out??

I first heard a couple of Sarah Borges' songs on Pandora, and enjoyed them enough to pick up her CD. And I'm so glad I did! This CD is great from start to finish. If you enjoy alt-country or country rock, I can't recommend Sarah Borges enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Country Album, April 21, 2007
This review is from: Silver City (Dig) (Audio CD)
Sarah is from Boston and they label her a folk artist but she sounds country to me. Her music has a great foot stompin beat and won't put you to sleep like the early folk artists. She has a wonderful singing voice that I adore. I am looking forward to her 2nd album to be released June of this year. Anyone who loves good country music should check this album out. Even if you like Sheryl Crow type rock you'll like it.
