A Perfect Snapshot,
By
This review is from: Silver Collection (Audio CD)
This is a really great overview of the career of one the most important voices in pop music: 24 tracks that sample the hits of the 1960s, along with a few insightful picks from out of left field. If you like her for the hits you remember -- I Only Want To Be With You, Son Of A Preacher Man -- this will give you a better picture of her talents and sensibilities than you could get from just a few singles. Only with this kind of exposure can you begin to perceive and appreciate the many shades of her White Soul interpretations in even the most pop or cabaret-diva selections. And it includes her inspired cover of 24 Hours From Tulsa, missing from the three-disc Anthology. Get it.

Excellent choice - all the hits are here. Sounds a bit mono, but only adds to the period charm. Great album artwork - I don't think Warhol ever did Dusty, but he should have!

Let me start by saying that I am not a big fan of female vocalists. As a matter of fact, it is a very infrequent occurance that a cd performed by a female is in my player. But, this is one fantastic vocalist and recording. Dusty Springfield is one of just a select few ladies whose music maintains my interest. Her mixture of soulful and gospel-like textures keeps me glued to every note that proceeds from her mouth. Of course, the highlights on this offering are her recorded hits, such as, "I Only Want to be With You", the classic "I Don't Know What to do With Myself", the soulful "Wishin' and Hopin'", and her number one seller "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". These are the stars of the show, but rest assured there is not a yawner in the mix! Every selection in this package is a listenable delight, not so much due to the content of the songs, but instead due to the excitement that Miss Springfield's voice brings to everything she sings.
There are very few female recording artists that bring such dymanic to the table. Perhaps Ashley Cleveland or Margaret Becker or maybe even Cilla Black from a few decades back could give her a run, but, I tell you the list is short. This cd is worth the price regardless of your personal taste in music. And believe me, there are not many musical cds that can receive an accolade like that!! Beach

Dusty Springfield's "Silver Collection" combines the best of her Philips and Atlantic releases. All of the hits are here, and they are numerous: "I Only Want To Be With You," "Stay Awhile," "Wishin' and Hopin'," "Son Of A Preacher Man," "In the Middle of Nowhere" and many more.
I love her Atlantic recordings: "Son Of A Preacher Man," "A Brand New Me," and "Goin' Back." On "Goin' Back," you hear all of the emotional qualities that gave Springfield an edge over other popular female vocalists: the longing, the resignation. She is in a class by herself.

She does a couple of numbers here that she shouldn't have attempted: My Colouring Book and Gene Pitney's 24 Hours From Tulsa... Otherwise, you ought to be pleased.
