Re-ssue from 1992? A bad one at that?,
This review is from: Silver Flame (Zebra Historical Romance) (Paperback)
I get so upset when re-issues are not listed as such in the "Product Details" section. Since I've been burnt before by not checking out what is written next to the "Publisher:" line, I always check it now. But this book's page does not even state that "Re-ssue" detail! From the other reviews, it's quite obvious that this is not even a good read. So I won't be buying it! It's pretty stinky of a publisher to re-issue a poorly written book/story just because in the "Now" the author has attained a certain status. But to list the book as a newly released novel by only listing 2008 as the published year is downright criminal. COME ON AMAZON!!

Sine Catrione Brodie is a determined young woman. At the age of twelve, she ran for her life, taking her two young brothers with her, and began her search for a knight to help her reclaim her life. Six years later, Sine Catrione is still searching for a strong knight to help her fight the one who wants her dead and reclaim the birthright that belongs to her and her brothers. Sine didn't need anyone to deter her from her quest, especially not the young knight Gamel Logan who stirs a passion in her she has never felt before.
The violet eye beauty mesmerized Gamel. He didn't care that she belonged to another; he knew he had to have her and once he possessed her he was never letting her go. Silver Flame is a fantastic novel. Sine Catrione is a heroine for the ages, a strong young girl who grew into a strong young woman who was just as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She lived her life to make sure her brothers lived, and she would sacrifice anything for them and those she loved. Gamel was awestruck by her beauty and her flowing silver hair that cascaded down to her knees but when he was giving a taste of her passion he was in love. I enjoyed every aspect of this story. The romance between Gamel and Sine was pure and beautiful even though he tricked her into his bed, the passion they shared for one another was in earnest. I also loved Farthing, he took Sine and her young brothers in and cared for them as his family. I especially loved how he goaded Gamel and played on Gamel's jealousy of the relationship that Sine Catrione and Farthing shared. I don't know if Hannah Howell has written a book about Farthing but I'm sure it would one hell of a story if she did. This is my first book by this Ms. Howell and it will not be my last, I'm already searching her website for others. Silver Flame is a terrific historical romance, I enjoyed it immensely and I most definitely Joyfully Recommend Silver Flame. Ley reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

This is the first Hannah Howell book I have not liked. I have almost every book she has written and save them on my keeper shelf but not this one. I didn't buy this book for myself and I'm glad I didn't. My daughter bought it as a gift and it was bad. I know some people meet and fall into love at first sight but usually they are falling into lust and that is what I felt this one was. The hero had to have her the minute he saw her, followed her blackmailed her, to his bed and then wanted to continue what he had started with her but she got away before he awakened. She was stupid and gave in to him right away as she thought he would tell the authorities that she was a thief. The others in the book were no more interesting then the hero and heroine. I would never tell anyone to purchase this book. Never thought to find one written by HH that was overall bad.

From the back cover-
For six years, Sine Catoriona Brodie has clung to a vow of vengeance. A pickpocket and street performer by trade, Sine bides her time until she can defeat her treacherous kinsman. Nothing will sway her form her path, not even Gamel Logan -a tall, lean knight whose hungry gaze and heated embrace stir a longing that is both delicious and distracting. From his first glimpse of her at a roadside camp, Gamel knows that Sine, with her violet eyes and hair like silken moonlight, is the soul mate he has sought. Yet Sine insists she belongs to another man, though her eager response to his seduction belies her every word. Gamel pledges to help Sine win back her lands from a cunning enemy, but the greater battle will be convincing her to conquer her past and trust in his enduring love..... This is one of Howell's earlier books before her 'Highland' series. Those, as well as this one, are not to be confused with her new paranormal series. Silver Flame is a conventional historical romance, well written but for me an average read. I think that Sine and Gamel (don't care for that name -really unsexy) got together too quickly. I'm not generally against love-at-first-sight scenarios but the lack of buildup in this book is a bit disappointing. And Gamel's man-handling in the beginning bothered me a bit, as did Sine's falling into his bed. The revenge plot was far more interesting. Howell really knows how to write some vile villains -these are no exceptions. Thats what kept me glued to the second half of the book when the romance was too predictable. There isn't much to be said about the secondary characters. They were OK but didn't have me engaged enough to be furiously searching for sequels. A lukewarm read because the romance wasn't that enticing after the first 100 pages. And since I don't read romantic fiction for the action/revenge/blackmail etc plots (no matter how good) I'd say pick this one up at the library instead. A solid Howell historical romance. Just not that entertaining compared her other books. Some of my favorites of hers are: Highland Bride (Zebra Historical Romance) Highland Groom (Zebra Historical Romance)

She keeps having the Hero's extorting woman for their favors for the hero's silence. What is worse the woman say it was wonderful and not a form of rape. If someone I don't know threatened me with jail or going to their bed I would rather go to jail. I don't care how much I lust after him. He is a jerk. I wouldn't be so excited if I choose to go and just lay their like a limp fish like the jerk deserves. It just doesn't seem my ideal one night stand. Sleep with me or I will have you thrown in jail! What if it was an ugly smelly man saying this to her? He would be vilified! She told him several times to back off and he ignored her. She had her reasons for saying no despite her and his desire shouldn't he have headed that? It isn't really very romantic.

The book was sort of slow. Not the usually Hannah Howell story and did not keep me captivated. Too many twist and turns that was not pleasing.

Okay, where do i start?
How about i just sum this up and tell it like it is. Here goes- this book was so stupid that i couldn't even make it to the next chapter. I tried. I did. Couldn't do it. Wasn't possible, the book met the wall and eventually my trash can (recycled) in a span of 20 minutes. Hannah Howell is one my favorite romance writers but lately her work has been on the WTF? side. |
