1.0 out of 5 stars As Enjoyable as a Glass of Stale Egg Nog
There is nothing on this disc that comes even remotely close to the stylish originality of her previous Christmas CD. Half of the tracks succumb to the same stale faux hip hop drum beats and the rest of the album just plods along on life support. Even Vanessa's usually reliable vocals sound flat and uninspired. Take heed, people, there's a reason why so many used copies...

When I think of the name Vanessa Williams it is synonymous with class, grace, eloquence, drive, determination and sheer talents. The girl has gone from Syracuse to Broadway and didn't miss a beat. Not to mention a Tony nod for "In the Woods". This lady presence commands and receives respects from fans and critics alike. One would expect another secular cd from this beautiful creature since it has been a while; however, once again V. tackles another Christmas cd. I would be the first to say, "I am not fond of Christmas music". I mean how many ways can you sing "Joy to the World" which by the way is one of the fine cuts on this cd in which she teams with Brian McKnight". Nevertheless, V's rich smooth voice makes even the most boring of Christmas songs delightful to listen to. Each cut from beginning to end is well done and has a wonderful music arrangement. Because her voice is not overpowering, she is able to interpret each song beautifully without going over the top or over singing. This is a wonderful collection of old staples and some fresh new ones. I highly recommend it for your holiday gatherings or just chilling alone. I am truly a fan for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally she's back with the Siver&Gold voice!, October 16, 2004
This review is from: Silver & Gold (Audio CD)
We have waited for SEVEN years(!!!) to get her new recording album. And now, Vanessa's back and better than ever!
"Silver & Gold" is a treasury of Christmas blessings in variety. Vanessa once again shows her range and talent in her singing career. "Silver & Gold" is a great Xmas album, just as good as her last one "Star Bright".
The title single "Silver and Gold" is elegant and beautiful tone that Vanessa's good at. "Joy to the World", a duet with Brian McKnight is so fresh and new, they both give terrific voice performance."Rise up, Sheperd and Follow" is the powerful Gospel taste to show Vanessa's soulful voice. We can also remember the R&B diva via "December Lullaby", a great great song! There's also some Jazz songs in this album, Vanessa's Favorite music style.
Welcome back, Vanessa!

For the past 21 years, I have followed this strikingly stunning woman that I have EVER laid my eyes on! You see, she is now a true music legend! She has gone from Miss America to A First-Class Pop-Diva and a well-established QUEEN! She has really saved us with her best work yet-Her 2nd Christmas CD, and I'd hope her next one will be a Smooth-jazz album, which happens to be her penchant. Not bad for a woman who is still selling PROACTIV at 4 am in the morning!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Holiday Album from Vanessa!, November 17, 2004

In my opinion, Star Bright by Vanessa Williams, is THE Best Christmas album I've heard since the Jackson5. However, she has created an equally fantastic and memorable album, with Silver & Gold. Her song choices are great and the arrangements along with her clear vocals make this album an instant classic. I have always loved her voice. When it comes to Christmas music, this 'genre' suits her best. This CD makes the old classics feel fresh and new. I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Silver and Gold Shimmers Brightly, December 30, 2004

It seems to be a trend that started out as a brilliant novelty; yet, now that every rising new star and their momma's are making Christmas albums, the novelty is staring to wear thin. I remember back in the day when it was cool for a new singer to put out their own spin of a Christmas collection. Mariah carey,Celine Dion, and Vanessa Williams all put out wonderful albums. Then, it started to get a little crazy.
Destinys Child put one out and its promise was delivered on a plastic plate with cheap picnic wear to serve it up.
I was begining to loose hope that any good Christmas albums would be made again.
Vanessa did it.
Her second Christmas album, which is not better than her first one, but just as good, is full of traditional favorites as well as some newbies. I love "Silver and Gold", the song is so peaceful and relaxing. It put me in the holiday mood instantly. Marys Boy Child is a wonderful rehash of a song All 4 One did (I don't know who origionally sang it) and as it approaches the end, it flows seemlessly into "O Holy Night". I adore the was she does "Silent Night" with a celtic twist. The song is pretty and sounds fresh. This album offers some nice gems. "Drummer Boy" has its own spotlight on this album (recall that it served as a cameo song on "Do You Hear What I Hear" from her last Christmas album) and it shines brilliantly. And "winter Weather" is a fun, cheerful Christmas song and Vanessa Williams sounds like she is all smiles while she sings it.
Silver and Gold is worthy of finding a home in anyones Christmas music collection. It is a perfect continuation of her previous effort, and hopefully an indication of what to expect on her next Holiday outing.

Vanessa Williams along with producer Rob Mathes and the London Session Orchestra work well to create another Christmas CD that is destined to become a treasured classic.

This compilation of Christmas cheer contains some great new renditions of the old Christmas classics. Highlights include a very smooth and mellow version of the title cut, "Joy to the World" with Brian McNight, "The Holly and the Ivy" and a more upbeat and jazzy version of The Carpenter's "Merry Christmas Darling". On "Winter Weather", Vanessa showcases some of her superb Broadway style vocals.

"December Lullaby" is a smooth jazzy track with superb lyrics and a great musical arrangement which will get your head "be-boppin". My favorite track off this compilation, however, is Vanessa's rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy". Vanessa's smooth voice with the added angelic sound of the Broadway Inspirational Voices choir towards the latter portion of this track add some gospel to the mix and will fill you with the spirit of the season. It's purely magical. The choir returns in "Rise Up Shepherd and Follow" which is another highly inspirational track that is sure to lift your spirits.

In Silver and Gold, Vanessa presents us with another very inspirational and jazzy collection of holiday cheer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, who needs a crown, anyway?, December 2, 2004

Starting with "Silver and Gold", continuing thru "Joy to the World", and consistant thru the whole cd, the music here just shines with fresh vitality.

I love Christmas music. Up to listening to this CD, Harry Connick, Jr. had been my favorite. And based on sheer originality (there are usually a few original songs on a HC, jr cd) he's still my all time favorite.

But for clear, classy vocals and fresh, original arrangement, VW definitely gets a kudos!

From the "disgrace" of the Miss America contest to present day, VW has shown grace, class, and the kind of beauty that radiates, even under pressure.

I would definitely recommend adding this cd to your Christmas collection.

Ms. Williams makes her triumphant return to music with this Christmas classic. A very good album, and should be bought with her 1st Christmas album, Star Bright, for a complete beautiful holiday season. Vanessa looks and sounds better than ever! My favorite track is "Joy To The World" with Mr. McKnight. Silver & Gold, is really what is says, and will last many holiday seasons for years to come. Pick this one up!
