Editorial Reviews

If you've never seen a Riders in the Sky show, you've been missing out--they combine country tradition with a sense of humor as wild as the Old West. This 2-CD set brings you their takes on classic cowboy songs like "Back in the Saddle Again" plus their hilarious "Andrew Lloyd Webber Medley" and much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta love this's The Cowboy Way! February 3, 2004

Tasteful, newly recorded versions of songs that Riders' fans have been enjoying for the past quarter century. This double CD set is an honest-to-goodness national treasure! I love every track. The Riders have always sounded great on record and the addition of Joey Miskulin as producer and resident accordion genius adds a refreshing new dimension to the Riders' recent efforts. Purchasing "Silver Jubilee" is a no-brainer for all self respecting Riders fans, and would be a fantastic introduction for new listeners. Also, if you ever have a chance to see the group *live* ...don't miss them!! The Riders in the Sky are incredible musicians and hilarious performers.

5.0 out of 5 stars western (cowboy) music at its best November 16, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Riders in the Sky rounded out their year long 25th anniversary by releasing a totally acoustic version of fan favorites. Even if you own any/all of their cds/records/cassettes, you need to buy this one. It is so clean sounding, you would swear you were sitting right next to them. There is bonus material, live performance material. 25 years is quite a bit of time, blazing new musical trails, rounding up new fans, fans who might have strayed away or should I say lured away by the glitz and glamour of today's pop sounding country. Run, don't walk, to your keyboard and order this one. Don't let it get away !

Three of the original four members of the "Cowboy" band Rider in the Sky have been together for almost 35 years now (!) but I just discovered this 2003 2-disc album celebrating their 25th anniversary together. And it's wonderful!

Often confused with Ray Benson's band - Asleep at the Wheel - (RITS plays "cowboy music" while AATW plays "western swing") - these guys carry on the tradition of the Sons of the Pioneers but with tongue firmly in cheek though they as fine musicians and songwriters as the Sons.

This 2-CD package contains nearly two-hours of entertainment. The first disc - and nearly half of the second - contains newly recorded versions of songs recorded for their Columbia, MCA and Round Lps. There are four classic SOTP songs written by Bob Nolan - including the now-standard "Cool Water" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" -, song that became hits for movie cowboys Gene Autry ("Back in The Saddle Again")and Rex Allen and as well as newer "classics" from RITS members Doug Green, plus their Grammy winning hit - penned by Randy Newman - "Woody's Roundup" (from "Toy Story"). The thing that separates RITS from the Sons is that, while paying respect to "The Cowboy Way" (the "Ranger Doug" green poem that ends the album), they add some modern day humor to it. Anyone who still laughs at the "campfire scene" in Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" will appreciate the Riders' song "Phantom of the Chuckwagon" - a brilliant parody of all things Webber. And long time western movie (or TV western) fans will appreciate the props given to the sidekicks on "Sidekick Heaven" There more fun here too but I'll let you discover it for yourself. And the instrumental solos and "yodel breaks" show you these guys are great musicians too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Somethings Missing February 2, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I may hate myself for this review in the morning, but I found the album lacking in some respect.

In particular I was disappointed in some of the comedy bits. The versions on this album seemed to lack the setup that was included on the earlier albums. I felt that all I was getting here was the punchline.

As a comparison, listen to the versions of 'Reincarnation' and 'The Salting of the Slug' from 'The Cowboy Way' album.

Such a shame because the live version of Rawhide was right on target. Perhaps because it was live.

Musically, this is a first class album and a worthy addition to your RITS library and I'm glad I got it, but I just can't give it five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CDs!! March 23, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I saw the Riders on Crook and Chase TV show and they were telling about this album so I ordered it.I'm glad I did because this is a great overview of all their most popular songs along with some live show recording that is a lot of fun.I popped in both discs in my car CD player as I took an extended trip and listened to both CDs several times. If you like Riders in the Sky you can't go wrong with this 2CD set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Unprepared January 9, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Totally unprepared as to how much I would enjoy this music that is ... although, I am one who likes a wide variety of musical styles, I originally intended this to be a gift for my dad ... I began to listen with the pre-conceived notion that I would find it novel and lose interest after the first few tracks; however, as the tracks spun on, I found myself enjoying the music more and more ... when disc two completed, I absolutely wanted to listen again ...

I did not realize how talented these guys are ... the musicianship is first rate, the vocals are stunningly beautiful and their corny humor comes across authentic and it works so well ... also surprising to me is how well they can cover the "standards" and yet also provide strong original material along side in the same spirit ... these guys had me patting my foot, then laughing along and then soaking in a beautiful ballad ... the 3-part yodeling is amazing ...

I wound up buying a few more of their titles right away ... I have to say again, I was totally unprepared at becoming a fan of this music and this great group of musicians ... highly recommended to anyone who likes this genre but also for anyone who just loves good music, well executed and authentic ...

There are many worthy titles in their discography; however, this 2 CD set is an excellent place to start. The production is top notch and the inclusion of some of their live numbers at the end of disc 2 gives a feel for the entertaining nature of their performances ... I plan to take the family to one of their concerts as soon as they come our way ...

No question this 2-CD set is 5 stars ...
