Peter Mulvey is brilliant. No two ways about it. This album is yet more proof. Peter's lyrics are always thought-provoking and his imagery is vibrant. Musically, this record is a bit edgier than his others, but entirely captivating in its own right. Several of the tunes and lyric passages on this record stay with me long after I listen and others pull emotional triggers.

Silver Ladder is everything a Peter Mulvey album should be ... intelligent, masterful, and multi-layered. It is a great casual listen and even better when you take the time to really pay attention.

Do not hesitate to buy this album. It is what good music should be.

I'm one of the people who Kickstarted this album. I've been a huge fan of Peter Mulvey since 2005. I've listened to the full album a couple times and I have to say that I'm underwhelmed in comparison to Peter's previous work. The writing of the lyrics and the music are stylistically significantly different from previous work.

I'm all for artistic evolution, but personally I think this album is dumber than previous efforts. I've particularly liked the fact that previous albums were filled with songs worth listening to, not just one. Kitchen Radio was a wonderful homage to getting older. The Knuckleball Suite was rich with allegory and beautiful instrumental work. Letters from a Flying Machine was filled with emotion and glorious composition. I am not sure there are any songs on this album that I will want to hear again, with the possible exception of "What Else Was It?" and "Remember the Milkman."

Remember the Milkman is very good. The music is at the right level and really accentuates the lyrics. The lyrics themselves are tightly written and allows the quality of Peter's voice to really stand out. I don't know who the female accompaniment is, but she was great too.

Several of the tracks (Lies You Forgot You Told, Sympathies, Back in the Wind, You Don't Have to Tell Me) are forgettable and not really worth your time. Kind of generic rock-ish, though Peter is enough of a genre bender that I can't fairly say that. You Don't Have to Tell Me is a particular offender. I've had to listen to it four times just to have a strong enough impression of it to be able to say its forgettable.

Copenhagen Airport is about something. I really have no idea what. I really enjoyed the extended musical intro. I liked the musical outtro.

After a few listens through I can say this is a terrific album. The songs grow on you and stick with you. Other reviewers are saying this album are a departure for Peter. That's probably because it relies less on guitar genius (though there is some of that) and more on song writing genius. Give it a chance. It really is a great album.

I cannot get enough of this man. I like the new sounds on this album, but his voice, the one that sounds like sex, bourbon and old leather, is still front and center.
