5.0 out of 5 stars Moody music
This is the debut disc for Moist, a five piece Canadian group. This album is full of dark themes meant to be played on a stormy night. On most songs, you get the feeling that lead singer David Usher is a very tortured soul due to the anger and pain that comes across in his vocals. A lot of times he will vary between hurried whispers to anguished screams. Mark Makowy's...

5.0 out of 5 stars Moody music, June 19, 2001

This is the debut disc for Moist, a five piece Canadian group. This album is full of dark themes meant to be played on a stormy night. On most songs, you get the feeling that lead singer David Usher is a very tortured soul due to the anger and pain that comes across in his vocals. A lot of times he will vary between hurried whispers to anguished screams. Mark Makowy's guitar often screams as loud and as agonized as Usher's vocals, often providing a tense counterbalance to the lyrics. Jeff Pearce and Paul Wilcox provide an extremely solid rhythm section. The final touch that really adds a lot to Moist's sound is the piano and keyboards played by Kevin Young. They add an almost gothic feel to most songs.

'Push', the album's lead single has been absolutely crushed by Canadian radio, which is sad because it is truly a dark and emotional song. 'Believe Me' is another single from the album, which deals with suicide. The haunting keys and simple, yet heartfelt guitar solo elevate this song to another level. The album's title track, 'Silver' is a slow grief stricken song and 'Freaky Be Beautiful' kicks things into high gear, featuring a really great piano solo. 'Into Everything' is a desparate song featuring some sombre piano and a tormented guitar solo and 'Machine Punch Through' is a dark and rousing song that just keeps building and building. 'Low Low Low' is another great slow, depressing song that is a great album closer.

All of the songs on this CD are excellent songs. They are presented with such emotion, sorrow and even self loathing at times that you think some therapy is in order.

Silver is an amazing CD that incorporates David Usher's scream-and-whisper vocals with a guitar and piano driven sound that's not often heard these days. The lyrics are excellent and heartfelt with a sadness that accompanies Usher's voice nicely. I first heard of Moist through the TV show Due South, where two of their songs were used during the show's run. I greatly enjoy music by Canadian bands, and Moist is definitely among my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars one little word she said but it was lost on me, June 5, 2010
This review is from: Silver (Audio CD)
WOW. I had first heard the song 'Push' while Beavis & Butt-Head were riffing the video, but I totally fell in love with that song. I did some research to find the band Moist and found that they were a Canadian 'Alt-Rock' band. I prayed that Amazon had the first album 'Silver' available. I managed to get it used for a really reasonable price...and after listening to it I would have been willing to pay more if I had to. This album to me feels like the time it came out of [1994]. 'Push' is a dark and angry song that gives the feeling of a smothering relationship. While 'Believe Me' is more in the vein of 'I wish I could help you'. 'Machine Punch Through' is another fav for being a powerful song. David Usher's use of lyrics can range from making you sorrowful to wanting to tear the room apart. You can't help but love most if not all of the songs. If you like '90s music, give it a try.

If you are new to Moist. This is the place to start.
Most of the songs on this CD are instant hit singles.
And you can see their early brilliance for creating some
really memorable hooks.

Excellent stuff. Great CD.

From here go directly to Mercedes Five and Dime and Creatures which
are more mature and resonant of what makes them unique in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, June 10, 2001
This review is from: Silver (Audio CD)
I had never heard of Moist when a radio D.J. gave me a free copy of "Silver" at a promotion of some kind. When I listened to it the first time I was surprised at how good it was. That was about seven years ago and it has been in heavy rotation since. I have never heard anything that sounds like Moist. Some songs are more heavy rock, while a few are slower piano oriented ones. There's not a bad song in the lot. And there is something here for most anyone. Alternative rock, classic rock, whatever. This album just rocks. If you find a copy, check it out. You are sure to be delighted.

By far the best Album by Moist to date. Dark moody lyrics, great vocals, bass, guitar, and drum work. Fans of Our LAdy Peace, I Mother Earth, and The Tragically Hip should enjoy this one. Everyone Should!

I am a big MOIST fan, and I have 'Silver', 'Creature' and 'Little Songs'. I love them all, and although I think 'Silver' is a really great album, I prefer 'Creature' more.
