Book Description

July 26, 2011
Every soul has a Mission-but every life has its Fate. If the Army had just let Wes Hutchinson be a pilot, maybe things would have been different. He'd get to marry his English love, Melody. They might have had a son he could teach to fly. Perhaps after the war Wes could have even squared things up with his sister's suitor, small town miscreant Frank Lawton. Their children could have been playmates; it would have been so perfect. But the day after Melody gives him a special gift and tries to tell him she's pregnant, combat gives Wes his life's wish. Left at the controls of his crew's ravaged bomber - with enemy fighters diving in for the kill - for his last harrowing minutes on Earth, he's a pilot. Mired in a fog of shame and heartbreak, Melody carries Wes' photo, his child, and the gift he left behind to his family in America. But by the time she reaches them, grief - and now-hometown-hero Frank Lawton - have taken their toll. We can only fight so hard, so long. Forty years later, war orphan Justin Prator can't explain the talent for flying he and his son Paulshare, until he's contacted by his birth mother, a kindly old woman with a stubborn English accent. The same day, Paul falls in love with an oddly familiar firebrand. Before they wed, Paul's "new" grandmother presents him with their family's lost icon - a silver ring - and pulls a smoldering tinderbox from the emotional rubble of World War Two.

About the Author

Nathan began flying at age eight, not long after learning he was the nephew of a B-24 flight engineer killed in action in 1944 and becoming obsessed with his story. That story, and many others close to his heart, inspired him to write his 2011 novel, A Silver Ring.

Licensed on his 17th birthday and an airline pilot at age 20, Nathan's now in his second decade with a major American airline. He lives for flying, his wife and family, a few "pet" vehicles, music, drink, cigars, and a well-turned double entendre.

Nathan has done an outstanding job of writing a story that anyone can identify with if they have ever lived. Of course pilots old and new will see the parallels of their own lives or of the people that they know through the always small world of aviation. This book even offers up how small the world of aviation truly is. Romantics will more than identify with the relationship side of this book between parents and kids, siblings, lovers, and married couples. It is a tale that I identified with in so many ways yet it was so different from my own life, and I believe most readers will be able to insert themselves into the book in their fitting role. The flying scenarios are very accurate and truthful. The non-pilot will be able to understand as good as the highly experienced aviator.

As a civilian trained airline pilot, trained by my best friend my father who passed away very prematurely, and now raising what promises to be a third generation pilot, I can recommend this book to all readers, but especially those with a love for aviation and the camaraderie that surrounds those of us so taken in by it. I only hope that Nathan has more of this kind of story to share with us.

Enjoy "A Silver Ring"!!

"A Silver Ring" ©2011 by Nathan Carriker, is, simply put, an aviation love story. Set in both World War II and the late 1980s, its characters from both periods are entwined throughout the book. The story documents an incredible journey for each character and it is a high-altitude ride of action, emotion, and anticipation. The author has an obvious passion for aviation and it launches off every page. The flying scenes are highly descriptive and even a non-pilot would understand what is happening in the cockpit as the drama unfolds. There are two major flight events in the book, one in WWII and one in modern day, that are eerily similar and further serve to connect the past with the present. But this is not just a book about flying: this is a book filled with heartbreak, love, shame, depression, joy and revelation. It's a book about relationships between parents and sons, between lovers, between friends, between forebears and descendants.

I read the first few chapters on the author's web site before the book was released. I could not wait to see what happened next and, once the actual book was in my hands, I could not put it down. The author expressively conveys the flaws of each character and I felt I was reading about real people rather than fictional ones. There were some personalities I didn't particularly like and that made the story seem all the more real. I felt I was right there with all of them as they lived through each experience. Even after I felt I knew them, they continued to astonish me as the book progressed.

The story transitions smoothly back and forth between time periods. Each chapter left me hanging in anticipation of the next. The author's writing style is conversational and the story rolls along easily. There are many surprises and twists, some of them completely shocking and unexpected.

While aviation and history lovers will appreciate this book, I also recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read as much as I do. I finished the book and I still can't wait to see what happens next...I hope there's a sequel.
