Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Schow, whose first novel, The Kill Riff, was published last month, has assembled an exceptional anthology of 19 stories and one vignette, all dealing in some way with the movies, moviemaking, movie houses, etc. Robert McCammon's "Night Calls the Green Falcon," is a beautifully constructed, funny, touching story about an old man who had been the star of adventure serials decades before, and who now dons his ridiculous superhero costume and goes forth to avenge the murder of a friend. Joe Lansdale demonstrates quantum growth in his spare, blood-chilling "Night They Missed the Horror Show," a tale of cruelty and death in redneck territory. John M. Ford's tense "Pre-Flash" tells of a man who recovers from a near-fatal shooting with the ability to foresee how people will meet their deaths. There are also excellent stories by Clive Barker, Ramsey Campbell, Jay Sheckley, Douglas Winter, Chet Williamson and Edward Bryant. Tobe Hooper has contributed a clever introduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Big-C Classic Horror Anthology, March 13, 2002

This review is from: Silver Scream (Hardcover)
Good and bad, that's what I was used to getting when I picked up an anthology, back in the day. I was surprised by Silver Scream's high level of quality. This volume is big. This volume is epic. And all about movies... (Well, one about TV. John Skipp challenging conventions, again.) I originally bought it during the early nineties, to sate my love of splatterpunk. While it certainly stands up -- Joe Lansdale's "Night They Missed the Horror Show" immediately springs to mind, as do a couple of others, for their raw, unflinching quality -- the book has much more to offer than that. This volume is a true reflection upon the genre, from brushes with the supernatural to encounters with the terribly real. Tales range from gut wrenchers, to thought provokers, to emotional sucker punches... If you enjoy the dark -- those moments after the lights go down, and the movie starts to flicker across the screen -- you'll love Silver Scream. This book remains in my top ten.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best collections ever ...., April 3, 2007
Other reviewers have said it more eloquently than I can. This is the third copy of this book I will be purchasing since ...1985??? . My other treasured copies were given to family members. The stories are unique and superb and haunting. If you love horror movies, this is a must have for your collection.
