5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!
This one blew me away. Rosenberg increasingly reminds me of Frank Capra: not only does the story have impact and scope, and not only are the major characters deftly drawn, but the minor characters shine like stars. I'll never forget Arnie Selmo or Dr. Sherve or Maggie Christianson.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still pretty good, but v-e-e-e-r-y slow
After reaching the midpoint of the book I was wondering just what had happened. When I added it all up, it didn't come to very much. Sure Ian is attracted to Torrie's mom, but do you have to tell me over and over and over again? And do we really need *all* those 4-letter expletives which don't add much to either the dialogue or the mood? I'll buy and read the 3rd in the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, well-plotted and fun to read!, February 19, 1999

One of Joel Rosenberg's best! Now, if you folks at Amazon can't eliminate all the "repetitive" comments (apparently from the same troll) can you at least remove the one who says he's me? I know you have done this before, but he's back...

Thanks.

Dale Rosenberg

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book. Read it. Read the next one, too., December 17, 1998

This is a typical Joel Rosenberg book, filled with fresh takes on classical ideas (dwarves as Neanderthals!!), terrific characters (Arnie Selmo agan threatens to steal every scene he's in although Ian Silverstein shines through again) and a some of the best action scenes I've ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific book -- I want the next one now!, September 3, 1998

This is Rosenberg's best yet, and that is saying something. The characters and scenes seem to leap off the page and into my mind.

Strongly recommended.

And do we really need *all* those 4-letter expletives which don't add much to either the dialogue or the mood? I'll buy and read the 3rd in the series, but I certainly hope that Rosenberg picks up the pace a little, and that we don't have a repeat of the downhill spiral we saw in his Guardians of the Flame series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Preparing the way for the really exciting stuff., September 13, 1996

This review is from: The Silver Stone (Keepers of the Hidden Ways, Book 2) (Hardcover)
The book focuses on secret agendas and emotional manipulation to achieve them. Tory's mother, Ian's father, Odin and various other characters. We learn more about Ian's background and details about his relationship with his father and his difficulties after leaving home, which is interesting. The action is very limited compared to The Fire Duke, things move slowly and few conclusions are reached. The whole book feels like it is setting the stage for the next book. It feels like Joel is trying to write a much deeper more psychological book than his usual style, but it also feels like he's packing all of it in early so he can get it out of the way. I think he should have spread it out more and related it more closely to the progression in the plot. The plot would have proceeded much more quickly that way. Not a bad book. I'm sure I'll buy next one, but I was hoping for more. gary hayenga
