4.0 out of 5 stars an album of many styles, not for everyone, April 28, 2011

This review is from: Silver (Audio CD)
This can be split into three types of songs. The most successful is the first group. The ballads are sublime. There are three 'Please don't fall in love', a beautifully orchestrated song with lovely harmonies. 'Ocean Deep' which is another orchestrated winner and a very expressive piano ballad. 'Hold on' is more synthesiser based, but no less effective. The opening melody is one of Cliff's best ever.
The second category is the mid tempo pop songs. 'The golden days are over' is also well orchestrated and almost sounds like somehting from a musical. An effective number, quite dramatic. 'Silver's Home tonight' is memorable enough. 'Never say die' is a bit funky. 'Baby you're dynamite', though, is very immature sounding and extremely tacky.
Then there is the synth experiments. 'Front Page sounds like something out of the early new waveish 80's punk. It's ok. 'Locked inside your prison' is better, with some vocal parts that are catchy.
'Love stealer' is a bit of synth glam rock, mixed with rock and roll. I don't like it at all. Cliff is rocking on this more than anything he has done before, in my opinion. But it just has no melody.
As with many Cliff albums, I am baffled by the choice of B-sides. Almost universally, Cliff's B sides are better than some of the album tracks. Lucille is ok, but 'Too close to heaven' begins enchantingly, then moves into a wonderfully written song, with great instrumentation and a pretty melody.
Recommended, but expect a myriad of styles.
