Product Description

Building a silent computer is often a difficult goal for enthusiasts and power users to achieve, especially if the computer needs to also be fast and cool. The SF01 is a package of two foam pads designed to help absorb noise with minimal impact inside a computer chassis. Each pad has large surface area and high density 4mm thick foam to provide good noise reduction and flexible integration choices.

I used the SilverStone foam to quiet a noisy computer tower. It was pretty easy to use, cutting to size with an exacto knife and ruler. The foam is lighter weight and softer than I would have expected. The adhesive is quite strong so you will NOT be able to remove and reposition it once you stick it down. Fold back a little of the non-stick cover, stick that edge in position, and then gradually peel the rest of the non-stick from between the foam and your surface, sticking as you go. The foam is soft and quite easily stretched, so you must be gentle and slow or you will pull the foam out of shape resulting in wrinkles and/or a poor fit.

I applied the foam to as much of the inside surfaces of the computer as I could without removing any parts or the motherboard. The computer is much quieter now, but by no means silent. A lot of the higher pitched fan and drive noise was eliminated. The sound now seems to be mostly "whooshing" air and is much less annoying though still quite audible.

This computer had an intermittent vibration on the main removable side panel, which I could always stop just by holding a finger against the side of the machine. However, keeping one hand on the case did slow down my typing considerably! I tried different solutions using tape and inserting paper shims in the seams but nothing really stopped that vibration. With the SilverStone foam it is now completely gone - that's a big improvement!

It's possible that DYNAMAT 10415 would have been even better - but it just seemed a little pricey to me at $19 for 200 square inches vs. 630 square inches of SilverStone for $14.

I recieved this Silverstone product yesterday it arrived in a large well packaged box. When I opend it I found 2 huge foam pads which were more than enough to cover both side panels of my Silverstone PS05B Atx mid tower case I bought on Jan 4 right here on Amazon with some left over to spare.

At any rate this is why I bought this foam, I loved the way my new case looked, it was lightweight, the cooling was great and everything else, yet the noise was unacceptable to me. The point is I have used lighweight cases like this Silverstone in the past and they always seem to be loud. I have learned over time it comes from vibration transfered into the case, which the thicker more sturdy, yet ultra heavy hard to move cases like my Antec 300 do not suffer from yet like I said they are a major pain to move due to the weight especailly if you are a gamer and want to go to LAN parties.

So I searched and found this foam buying it in a last ditch effort to solve my problem.

WHAT THIS PRODUCT DOES :

If you already have a PC which is quiet, this foam will be the finishing touch of a silent masterpiece !

If you are like me and have a PC that is not super loud just a bit loud for your liking this foam will help in a noticable way and I must say it worked wonders to get rid of the vibration in my side panels. The high pitched ring present before installing the foam is all but gone. Before installing I could literally feel the vibrations when putting my hand on the side panels and now it is almost gone completly when putting my hand on the case. It also for whatever reason provided some feel of rigidity to the side panels which felt flimsy prior to installation.

In short is stiffened them up a bit which all contributed to the reduction in noise.

If your computer currently sounds like a blender, please stop reading this review. You need more help than a 1/8" thick sheet of foam can offer.

But if you're already building a reasonably quiet desktop or HTPC, this product will make it even better.

It's a cinch to cut with ordinary scissors, and simple to install; peel, then gently roll onto a dust-free surface. Pat down lightly. It sticks extremely well. You won't be removing this product for re-application, so measure twice, cut once, dry fit.

Has no offensive odor like some other denser, butyl rubber or asphalt based 'sound mats'. And it costs a fraction of what they sell that stuff for...

I received two flat, carefully packaged sheets of cushy, gray, self adhesive EPOM foam with no aluminum foil liner. Applied it to the top, bottom, and side panels of a cheap, echoing, sardine-can-of-a-mini-tower desktop PC case, before installing any components. All of my fans are very quiet Noctuas, but this material made the thin sheet metal sound 'denser', and an already quiet machine became even more hushed. I've experienced no increase in case temperatures with this new insulation, but I have both intake and exhaust fans moving all air from front to back, as well as a passive side panel vent.

Absolutely worth the fifteen bucks, as long as you're not expecting it to silence a jackhammer. (Building a quiet computer requires more thought, planning, and money than just slapping a band-aid on a hemorrhage and expecting a miracle cure.)

As usual, the one and two star reviews here were written by whiney crank-yankers.
