Product Description

USB 2.0 is the most widely used port in modern computers, but with USB 3.0 emerging to provide up to ten times speed increase, the move to upgrade to USB 3.0 becomes more important. The FP36 is SilverStone’s solution for users to quickly upgrade cases that lack front USB 3.0 ports. It is also a drive bay adapter that has mounting slots for two 2.5"hard drives. The FP36 has cables that connect directly to motherboard rear I/O panel’s USB 3.0 ports (for motherboards with built-in USB 3.0 support) and sports a beautiful brushed aluminum front cover that blends nicely with most cases.

The piece itself is very sturdy and well finished.

I used an adapter to connect these into the 20-pin motherboard header, since my case does not have it's own fron USB 3.0 ports.

I have a couple of these units in use and they function exactly as intended (which they should, because they are very simple, with no electronic circuitry at all). You can mount two 2.5 inch hard drives or SSDs in the back part, and there are two USB 3.0 pass-through sockets on the front panel. "Pass Through" means that there are two long USB3 cables coming out the back of this thing that you have to run through your case, out your computer's back panel, and plug into two of your existing USB3 ports. A special rear-slot cover plate with cable guide holes in it is provided, to facilitate this.

This device on its own does not add any ports! It simply relocates them to the front of the computer. Note that USB 3.0(SuperSpeed)is quite new at this time(May 2011). If your computer is not a brand-new latest model, you probably don't have any USB 3.0 ports, and you will need an add-on USB 3.0 card. (Example: Amazon ASIN B003GSLDGI.)

My only issue with this thing is its size. Specifically, it is a tiny bit(about 1mm)wider than a standard old 3.5 inch floppy drive. I have one PC using a Silverstone case and of course it fits perfectly in there. But I tried to put one in another PC and it simply would not go in the hole. The drive bay I wanted to use was made to exactly fit a floppy drive and was just too tight to work with this unit. This is a problem I have encountered before with other similar Silverstone products.

Otherwise, it's nicely made from plated steel and anodized aluminum, not junky plastic, and it has a real quality look and feel. If it fits your needs (and your drive bay) I recommend it.

Of course the main function of this is to provide two front USB 3.0 ports which it does and they work at full speed when connected.
I used an adapter to connect these into the 20-pin motherboard header, since my case does not have it's own fron USB 3.0 ports.

You CANNOT use the two slots for 2.5" drives without MODIFYING the enclosure, I had to cut a larger hole at the bottom for the USB cables to come out and it was VERY close to not fit at all by shoving the cables down very close to the front to fit 2x 2.5" SSD's in this.

2nd problem: There is only one screw holding down the front USB 3.0 ports and the way the cables pull at it the ports bend sideways and I'm lucky they don't bend enough to where I could not fit usb 3.0 plugs in to the ports. The devices stick out at an angle for both ports.

Overall the total functionality is there with my modification.

The metal prongs on the USB 3.0 ports do not sit outside the plastic like the picture shows, unless I would be able to move it but I don't think it came that way.

I got this little gem to hold my new SSD and give me easy access to the USB3 ports on the back of my MB.
The piece itself is very sturdy and well finished. It fits in perfectly with my CM 690 case.

It is build well and probably works well, but what's the point of a zero addition of 3.0 USB? Meaning you lose two 3.0 rear ports to have two front ports. Why not have connection to MOBO?

It gets the job done but the ports are a bit "wiggly" so when you plug/unplug the USB cable into them the move around a bit - they do not feel "solid" by any means.

Filled my need for USB 3.0 ports in my older case. I like my old pc case and when I upgraded the computer itself, this gadget allowed me to keep my old case yet have the new ports right up front. It holds my SSD drive as well. Well designed strong cased unit.
