Great fantasy story, but...,
By
This review is from: Silver's Bane (Paperback)
Silver's Bane was a wonderful read! The story is very engaging and tense, with a very interesting ending (although a little too abrupt for my taste). I would recomend it to anybody that likes fantasy and wants something a little away from what you would call "ordinary" in the fantasy world.
But so far I only said good things about it, so why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5? Well, although it was very interesting to read, I thought that it could have been better. I thought that the characters in times were a little "out of character", getting to conclusions that didn't seem to fit what was portrayed before as what they would think. The whole idea throughout the book that makes you confused about who are the good and evil people accentuated this "out of character" effect. Anyway, this (mostly subjective) detail did not take out the joy from reading the book. I hope Anne Kelleher continues enriching the fantasy literature for years to come!

A Wonderful Series,
This review is from: Silver's Bane (Paperback)
The writer of this series saw me inquiring about these books on one of Yahoo's reading groups and graciously offered me the first two books. I am so glad she did. Both books were wonderful and I was thrilled to find out there is a third.
The goblins were horrible villains who feasted on humans and sidhe alike. To control them, a silver caul was created with faery magic. The caul protects the realms for many years but a new sidhe queen sits on the throne and she isn't the leader her mother was. I love books where multiple groups of people come together for a common cause. When the caul goes missing and the goblins once again overrun both worlds, young heroes from the sidhe and mortal worlds step forward to do their parts to stop the savage goblins. To their horror, the goblins are bigger and fiercer than ever before. I fell in love with the sidhe and was entranced by their beauty. I could see how mortals would be bedazzled by them. I was equally repulsed by the goblins. Kelleher's descriptions and characterization brought her characters to life for me and I was totally immersed in her worlds. I can't wait to read Silver's Lure.

Great ending...,
By JB Barnes (Boston, Mass) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Silver's Bane (Paperback)
... to an eagerly awaited sequel. Anne Kelleher's Silver's Bane takes up where Silver's Edge leaves off and continues the story of the struggle of Nessa, Cecily and Delphinea to save their worlds from disintegration, chaos and tyranny. In the process, all three young women discover depths of character, inner strengths and love. Unlike Silver's Edge, where the emphasis was on the fantasy, Silver's Bane develops the relationships of the three heroines and their respective (and sometimes unlikely) heros.

BRILLIANT EVOCATION OF A FANTASY WORLD,
By
This review is from: Silver's Bane (Paperback)
In Silver's Edge and the conintuation of the story in Silver's Bane, of the war between the mortals of Shadowland and the faerie-like Sidhe of Otherworld that eventually involves the savage and evil goblins, author Anne Kelleherkeeps the reader enthralled in a world of pure magic. She uses Celtic mythology in the way J.R.R. Tolkien used Norse and Anglo-Saxon folklore to spin a suspenseful tale. A third book, Silver's Lure, continues the story of Nessa, the blacksmith's daughter, the reluctant queen of mortals, Cecily, and Delphinea of the Sidhe, and will be released next year.

A VERY GOOD FAERY STORY,
By
This review is from: Silver's Bane (Paperback)
I ORDERED THE FIRST TWO BOOKS IN THIS TRILOGY AND I WAS HIGHLY IMPRESSED. THE STORIES WERE WELL THOUGHT OUT AND IT REALLY TRANSPORTS YOU IN TO THEIR WORLD. I LOVE THAT THE AUTHOR MADE THESE WOMEN STRONG AND NOT GODDESS GORGEOUS LIKE MOST AUTHORS DO. SHE MADE THEM LIKE REAL WOMEN AND IT WAS VERY NICE CHANGE. I HAVE READ THESE BOOKS OVER NOW ABOUT 3 TIMES AND I CAN'T WAIT TO GET THE THIRD ONE.

"Silver's Bane" was an excellent sequel and finish to the story begun in "Silver's Edge." All of the action, excitement, and romance came to a good conclusion in this book.
For a fantasy novel, this was very realistic. By that I mean, not all the characters had a happy ending. Nobody came away from the war unscathed and they all had to deal with the aftermath. Some of the characters have to make hard choices, and deal with the repercussions of those choices. It lent an edge of credibility to the novel. I'm looking forward to the prequel, "Silver's Lure," which should hopefully be out soon!

At last...the sequel,
By
This review is from: Silver's Bane (Paperback)
I was left hanging by Silver's Edge, so I bought Bane as soon as it came out and wasn't disappointed. The story moves well and I love that the characters are complex enough to surprise you. Just like the real world, the good guys are a little bad, and the bad guys a little good. Most of all, I love her writing, which is just poetic. The power of her words conjures up amazingly vivid pictures in my mind, and isn't that what we read for? Looking forward to the prequel.

great sequel to Silver's Edge,
By
This review is from: Silver's Bane (Paperback)
This book is the sequel to Silver's Edge, and it was a great follow-up.
There is a short synopsis of the previous book at the beginning of this one, then it plunges right in where we left off. I thought that the characters, especially a couple of the male ones, were more fleshed out in this book than in the last. Artimour became a real person and not a cardboard figure. I agree with one reviewer who said that a few things seemed out of character. Vinaver's actions for one, and the villains (i.e. Timias) didn't produce as much conflict as I would have liked. I really liked the way that the romance developed more in this book. And so you know - there were at least a couple fairly graphic sex scenes - but nothing seemed gratuitous. As I wrote in my earlier review, I really enjoy the way the author weaves a Celtic-feeling fairy story, with Celtic myths and Celtic culture. The whole story and conflict is built on a sort of Celtic/pagan-religious way of looking at the universe. It's nice and different. My only complaints would be that this should have been a trilogy! The book wrappd up pretty quickly, and if it had been longer the villains could have had more time to work more mischief and prolong the tension. As it was, there were some surprising sad parts, but it still could have been drawn out longer.

Silver's Bane concludes the Shadowlands Trilogy,I was so Engrossed that I read it overnight. I liked that the story wasn't clean and pretty by the end, you really got the sense that the war would leave lasting scars for all involved. There is quite a bit more romance, and some deep sadness as well, The use of magic in these books hits you on such an emotional level. some of the sequences are beyound amazing. There is a spiritual connection to be found in these novels that goes well beyond what you would expect to find in the average fantasy read. If you like books that stay with you long after the turn of the last page, give this trilogy a try.
