I have been building PC's from parts for 10 years and missed a very small but quite impactful piece of the instructions. Step 5 says "Secure cooler onto the motherboard with spacer between the backside of motherboard and hex nuts". There's a small, 1/2" x 1/2" piece of rubber that was in the bag that I missed. Basically where Intel's stock fan pushes into the holes of the Intel motherboard with plastic pieces and then secures it by a twist mechanism, this cooler has screws (hex nuts) that must be used underneath the motherboard. They are metal and I scraped the circuits of the PCB board underneath, causing damage to my motherboard. I know this is my fault, but the hex nuts should come coated or the spacers built in.

In addition, where Intel's cooler has a fixed distance between mounting holes, the Silverstone's are adjustable. One would think that was good except all Intel processor mounting holes are the same - this only leads to difficulties in getting it installed. Further, the mounting posts that the hex nuts screw into are barely long enough to grab the first thread.

If you bought this after building your PC then also note that you're going to have to take your motherboard out of the case, as again you'll need to screw the hex nuts under the motherboard. That's kind of a pain. If you're building it net new then no big deal.

HOWEVER: After getting it installed and learning from my mistakes, the idle CPU temperature with the stock Intel heatsink was 52 degrees Celsius. With the Silverstone heatsink it runs at 40 degrees Celsius, so this thing does its' job and does it well. It is whisper quiet even at 100% speed (which is 2339 RPM).

Overall if they improved their mounting bracket and instructions this would be 5 stars in my opinion.

I purchased the Silverstone AR01 to replace a 5 year old AMD OEM cooler on a Phenom X6 CPU, form factor AM2. The OEM performance had degraded. Running project SETI at 100% CPU pretty much 24/7, my best peak core temps had started out around 45C degrees (high end), degrading to 67C (well into red zone) by this year. My ASUS M2N motherboard frequently used to kick all the fans into a very noisy high rpm. I spent an entire afternoon on this replacement project that should have taken a couple of hours, but it was worth it. Peak core CPU temp running SETI, with the new Silverstone CPU cooler, is now 35C-37C degrees, nearly a 50% reduction. And the 120mm fan is so quiet it is hard to hear. I could give this product 5 stars, but had to dock it at least one star for insultingly unhelpful instructions.

Unfortunately, the Silverstone instructions have been scaled down and printed on small card stock at magnifying-glass readability, in 7 languages, with unhelpfully terse single sentences for each step. The parts and assembly pictures are black and white line mechanical drawings (not photographic or grayscale), equally small, and hard to interpret. Despite having done this task many times in past years, the pictures seemed to very clearly indicate the mounting back-plate is mounted on the topside of the motherboard, which does not work and is also counter-intuitive. Assembling and disassembling "dry" until I was sure all the parts would fit, and that the installation would actually work, doubled my assembly time. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give the instructions a -500 for user friendliness - arguably the worst instructions I ever encountered in my life. The plate actually does fit correctly on the underside of the motherboard. I used Google to find this Silverstone video, equally breezy as a promotional tool rather than helpful tutorial, but more helpful:

For what it is this is a nice cooler. I put this on a 95W i7 CPU in a relatively small case (lian li pc-tu100) and it for typical use including light gaming it does its job just fine. If I try to push the cpu to the max using a burn-in app I can definitely push temps to overheating but that's expected in a small case build with a high wattage CPU. Overall I'm satisfied with the performance and I don't think that any cooler this small could do a better job.

As far as aesthetics I love the look of this cooler and it's the centerpiece of my build. I did notice that after a few weeks of light use the white plastic had absorbed some dust so that the edges were starting to look more grey. I don't really mind and think that it gives it sort of a "millenium falcon" aged look: not as pretty and pristine as it started out but it has character and still looks cool. I did not make any attempt to clean the plastic and there wasn't yet any actual layer of dust visible, more that the plastic looked stained by tiny dust particles embedding themselves in the pores of the plastic.

Overall I'm very pleased with this purchase and would buy again.

I'm giving you the bottom line first: It's a decent cooler. I was disappointed with it at first but after changing the fan to an FQ91, I am pleased. My goal was to reduce CPU temps by 10 degrees. This I achieved without going to a liquid cooler.

I'm an enthusiast, not an expert. This cooler replaced a NT07-1156 CPU cooler and was put into an SG05 case, GA-77n-wifi MB, i3770K CPU OCd to 4200MHZ, r9-270x GPU, sx600-G PSU.

My CPU temps were reaching 80 degrees under load and I wanted it south of 70. When I installed the AR06 I was disappointed. My CPU was still hitting 75 degrees. I decided to put a 90x25mm fan instead of the stock 90x15 since I had the room. It now peaks at 69degrees under load and is the least noisy fan in the system—and this system is quiet. The fan I chose was the silverstone FQ91. Nice fan.

Here's how I rate it stock: (1 to 10 scale)

Noise (normal) 10
Noise (load) 7
cooling 7
Build quality 10
mounting hardware 9 (minor fit fiddling but solid as a rock)
Instructions 5

Though not on a par with the NT06 Pro, I would buy it again— It fit and it does the job. If you buy one and want to change to a 25mm tall fan, You'll have to get longer screws. The stock screws go through the full depth of the fan. I used the the stock screws and screwed them in the bottom mounting holes and made a spacer cause you can't screw them in too far without hitting the outside frame/fin.
