Product Description

After successfully expanding and leading SFF(small form factor) cases and SFX PSU into the DIY (do it yourself) market, SilverStone engineers have continued their push for advancement in these categories by releasing a true upgrade-worthy small form factor power supply, the ST45SF-G. Despite being half the size of a regular ATX power supply, the ST45SF-G can still produce continuous power output of 450W. Its 80 PLUS Gold level efficiency is a great leap from the previous SFX best of 80 PLUS Bronze and the full modular cables is also the first of its kind for this form factor. To enable users to easily take advantage of this excellent SFX power supply, an adapter is included to convert ST45SF-G to mount in any ATX case in addition to ones that fit only SFX. For SFF users and for SilverStone, the ST45SF-G is more than just an upgrade, it is an important milestone for DIY desktop computer.

It's very quiet.

In small cases, being able to leave only the cables you need makes a big difference (easier management and better air flow).

I did like the bigger fan helped cool the case better.

I saw the SG05 at Fry's Electronics in Atlanta several years ago, and I have always said to myself "I should get it some day for a low-power Linux box or HTPC." We'll, after seeing the Bitfenix Prodigy come out, it got me thinking about a mini-ITX build. I started looking at everything mini-ITX that is out now, and it looks like things have gotten much better. Instead of this low-power Linux box, I could house some actual parts and replace my Corsair 650D with something smaller since I just need one PCI-E slot.

That being said, I turned to this PSU because it was the only one that was modular, 80 Plus Gold, and enough wattage (Coming from an AX750 in my Corsair 650D, I didn't want to compromise).
I was worried that Amazon would ship me one of the older v1.0 units and I'd get the annoying fan noise. However, I ordered mine on 10/20/2013, and I got the v2.0. This made me happy to know I got the most recent and silent one. I probably would have returned a v1.0 had Amazon sent me one.

This thing is dead silent. My Corsair H50 pump drowns out the noise of the fan. I can only hear it if I put my ear right up to the back of the PSU. People will say "you'll use all the cables anyway, so get the non-modular, hur hur hur!!!" However, if you're really into this stuff, you'll get the 80 Plus GOLD and Silverstone's short cable kit (P/N: PP05) and shorten and cut the cables yourself to save space. That way, if you screw it up, you can just replace the cables. Plus, I've avoided using one of the cables, so I don't have to tuck cables anywhere.

I bought it for those two reasons over the non-modular. That, and it was just as expensive as getting the SG05 + non-modular PSU together. Instead, I got the SG05 Lite and this PSU.

This power supply works extremely well in SFF cases (using a Silverstone SG05) and allows the use of higher end components, particularly high end graphics cards. However, the stock cooling fan is noisy even when the system is idling and intolerable if you keep the machine on your desk. The solution is to replace the fan with something quieter, such as the Noiseblocker 80x15 model. The Noiseblocker is nearly silent at idle and reasonably audible under load. Its rated db output figure is about half of the stock fan, so if you believe the ratings, it's exponentially more quiet. By the way, the airflow output is on par with the stock OEM fan. This DOES void the warranty and working on power supplies is DANGEROUS without taking proper precautions. Silverstone should really use a better fan in this power supply, but I am thankful they are pushing the limits of the SFX form factor.

I bought this for a smaller case build and it is dramatically smaller than I anticipated. I love it. Also, fully modular is a huge plus. Powers my system quietly with ease.

My only complaint is that there are no options for reducing the number of fan or sata power connectors. I've only got one hard drive but the sata power cord has three terminators on it. The same was true for hooking up my one fan controller. Now I have all these extra terminators in the case that I don't need. So much for modular!

Easily powers: ASRock B75M-ITX + Core i5 + 16GB ram + Samsung SSD + 3 case fans

Using this with a Silverstone SUGO SG05BB case, works perfectly and is inaudible (2.0 revision). I also picked up Silverstone's short cable kit and mixed and matched the cables to get the best fit (the kit is fully compatible with this).

I bought this power supply to use with the Silverstone Fortress FT03-MINI Mini-ITX case.
I went for this modular PSU model over the cheaper non-modular version because I thought it would be nice to not have extraneous cables taking up room.

I've been using it for many months without a single problem or hiccup. Stable, quiet, nice quality piece of hardware.

The cables are very nice quality, though, having thick, opaque black sleeving that feels higher quality than what I'm used to from Corsair.

Now, I should mention I don't regret the purchase, but for the FT03-MINI it may not be entirely the best choice. I ended up using all but one cable (the old style 12V molex cable) so I can't say the modular features came out being exactly helpful in my case -- but the modularity IS a nice feature overall. Just know that the thickness of the plugs on the modular cables stick out far enough from the power supply that you can't use the DVD-drive tray in that particular chassis. (I wasn't anyway, so it was no concern.) Just know it's not 100% compatible (without DIY modification) with the FT03-MINI right out of the box. There's a reason why Silverstone doesn't list it on their website as a recommended PSU for the case.

I use this PSU with:
Ivy Bridge Core i5 3.4 Ghz
8GB DDR3 memory
2x hard drives
nVidia GTX 570

I was after a small and quiet PSU. This thing is surprisingly small. Short cables are nice. At idle, I can only hear a slight rush of air. Under load, however, this thing is too loud for me. I just got finished playing State of Decay, and when I took my headphones off, it sounded like my box was going to take off. After a few minutes it quieted down again. I'm not sure what sets off the PSU fan, maybe I need to either improve the thermals in my case or just get a different PSU.
