Product Description

Combining two of SilverStone's most distinctive computer chassis breakthroughs - the unibody construction of the Temin TJ07, introduced in 2005, and the 90 - degrees rotated motherboard mount of the RAVEN RV01 from 2008 - the Fortress FT02 advances both chassis construction and thermodynamics in a dynamic, streamlined design. With the Fortress FT02, SilverStone engineers have combined the rigidity of unibody construction with the unparalleled cooling layout of the RAVEN chassis, adding a hot - swappable hard drive cage and an acoustically padded interior for maximum versatility. The result is increased structural strength, increased storage capacity, and whisper - quiet operation. Available in black and silver colors, its elegant outer shell is perfectly accentuated by the U - shaped unibody aluminum frame that not only provides unique styling, but also functional purpose. The bottom gap from the frame to the main body actually serves as the main air intake area for its three massive 180mm fans, making it even suitable for use on carpeted surfaces. For professionals and enthusiasts looking to build a silent workstation or gaming machine with maximum performance, there is no better than the SilverStone Fortress FT02. Now updated with USB3.0 ports.

NOTE: Original review for the FT02 case - this is the updated model with USB3.0 support but identical design.

If you're considering this case but turned off by the price, consider the advice I once got from a wise computer sage, "Buy a good case once and you'll never have to replace it;" this is well heeded advice. I've had this case for nearly three years, through multiple hardware upgrades, and would hand's down say it is the best I've ever owned and likely seen. As an avid DIY computer builder and IT professional I have worked on many computers in my lifetime and this case fits every need you could have short of super enthusiast builds.

First I'd like to mention that this box is HUGE. While considered a mid-tower it is nearly the size of a full tower lying down. This may be good or bad depending on your setup, but normally height is a problem more than depth. It is also remarkably heavy (around 35 lbs) but this speaks to the quality of the materials. This thing is built like a tank! It's held up through 3 moves, including 2 cross country trips in the back of a U-Haul without so much as a ding. The material quality is high, with thick aluminum construction, sound dampening foam, and powder coated paint (I don't have a single scratch on it). The only downside is the top panel is made of metal mesh with a plastic frame which feels flimsy. However, after a few years it hasn't broken or been damaged.

Inside the case is well designed and laid out. The vertical hot-swap hard disk drive (HDD) bays are convenient, however, it ships with only one HDD connector. If you want to install more than one HDD you'll need to buy more adapters or use a standard SATA cable.

For those of you that want more room than a Mid Tower case but can't fit a full tower case under your desk this is the case to get. Additionally, the 90 rotation of the motherboard really helps keep things cool and helps organize and tie down the case wiring.

Nearly everything is good about this case, the build quality, appearance, and fit & finish. you won't be disappointed. The 3 fans at the bottom of the case circulate a tremendous amount of air through the case silently.

There are only 2 downsides to this case -
1. Silverstone only includes 1 hot swap connector with the case. For the price of this case all the 3.5 inch drive bays should have these connectors. If you're planning on using more than 1 drive purchase the SilverStone CP05 Convenient Hot-Swap SATA II Cables when you order this case. You'll 4 of them to cover all of the 3.5" bays.
2. There are no convenient places to hold on to the case when moving it. Be careful when moving it since its quite heavy.

I read the reviews and was skeptical about this case. I had it in the cart, then read more and removed it and kept looking... then I read an unbiased review of the case written by people that regularly test computer components and rate them. They had only good things to say about it. The only bad thing was that the top panel expansion slots had screws and they thought it deserved to have black thumbscrews. This was such a small thing, I put the case back in the cart and pulled the trigger on it. It arrived after a dispute with UPS about me not being home for delivery when I was sitting in the front window of the house and watched the driver go down the street and not even stop...UPS is the worst delivery company there is, no wonder so many clients try them and leave them. Take a hint here Amazon :) Anyway I opened the case packaging and was aware of the reported degassing smell others have complained about here. It was there, but it was not overpoweringly strong even in the box where it had gone through the AZ heat in a sealed condition. The smell wasn't a bad smell either, sort of a new carpet, new electronics, new car smell combined, kind of nice actually. I took out the case, opened it all up, removed both side panels and left it out overnight. The next morning the smell was almost to the point of being nonexistent. I did put in some black thumbscrews in the expansion slot covers and did some touch up on the silver rivets that were sued in the construction of the internal steel case.Read more ›

Pros
----------------------

1. The case overall is built really well and what you read online is accurate.

2. The rotation of the motherboard seems very efficient for cooling.

3. The three intake fans are quite large and come with filters to help keep dust from entering the case.

4. Plenty of room for peripherals, long video cards, water-cooling, etc.

Cons
----------------------
The main issues I have with this case are possibly nitpicking, but they were enough for me to give the case 3 stars.

1. The gap between the door and the back of the motherboard is no veryt wide making cable management difficult to accomplish. I had to run most of the PSU cables on the same side as the motherboard because of this. I don't know why companies don't make the gap wide enough for thick PSU cables. I guess its cost-cutting.

2. you are only provided with a single adapter for an internal HD which is somewhat disappointing for a case in this price range. I have two internal drives and didn't have enough SATA cables for them. Also, to hook them up to the hot-swap cage, you need to order a special adapter from Silverstone.

3. The fans that come with the case do not support speed control through the BIOS which is annoying. There is a switch to toggle the fans between low and high settings, but that seems rather primitive considering most modern motherboards have BIOS fan controls which can be regulated by system temperatures.
