Product Description

Color: Black | Style: w/ Side Window

Combining two of SilverStone's most distinctive computer chassis breakthroughs - the unibody construction of the Temin TJ07, introduced in 2005, and the 90 - degrees rotated motherboard mount of the RAVEN RV01 from 2008 - the Fortress FT02 advances both chassis construction and thermodynamics in a dynamic, streamlined design. With the Fortress FT02, SilverStone engineers have combined the rigidity of unibody construction with the unparalleled cooling layout of the RAVEN chassis, adding a hot - swappable hard drive cage and an acoustically padded interior for maximum versatility. The result is increased structural strength, increased storage capacity, and whisper - quiet operation. Available in black and silver colors, its elegant outer shell is perfectly accentuated by the U - shaped unibody aluminum frame that not only provides unique styling, but also functional purpose. The bottom gap from the frame to the main body actually serves as the main air intake area for its three massive 180mm fans, making it even suitable for use on carpeted surfaces. For professionals and enthusiasts looking to build a silent workstation or gaming machine with maximum performance, there is no better than the SilverStone Fortress FT02. Now updated with USB3.0 ports.

Despite the four stars, this is one of the best (if not the best) air-cooling cases money can buy because of its thermodynamic design and shear aesthetic beauty derived from simplicity. It's a high performance case that isn't outlandish in appearance.

Pros:

-Extremely sturdy chassis construction
-Very nice aluminum body with nearly all exposed surfaces made of aluminum or steel (very little plastic)
-For air cooling, there are less than a handful of cases that can beat this case in terms of component temperatures
-Very quiet, but NOT silent (a lot of people have unrealistic expectations)
-The easily removable dust filters on all intakes make this case extremely easy to maintain
-This is the USB 3.0 Updated version: includes some things that weren't in the first FT-02 cases - standard AP181 fans (no removable fan grill now, so fits a 12in HD5970 graphics card), black sleeving on the fan cables (except for top exhaust fan), HDD drive trays all have 2.5 in mounting holes for ssd's
-Everything else not mentioned here or in the cons section

Cons:

-Very Heavy, difficult to transport when fully loaded without bear-hugging it (no handles - the price to pay for good looks)
-GPU cooler specific - this case works best with a blower type heatsink, the twin fan designs will fight against the natural airflow of the case (still viable, but not ideal). Heatsinks that with fins that aren't parallel to the case's natural airflow will render the heatsink solution near useless! (excess heat will build up) AKA ASUS direct CU II (gtx 680 version) will not work, but MSI Twin Frozr will be fine.

NOTE: Original review for the FT02 case - this is the updated model with USB3.0 support but identical design.

If you're considering this case but turned off by the price, consider the advice I once got from a wise computer sage, "Buy a good case once and you'll never have to replace it;" this is well heeded advice. I've had this case for nearly three years, through multiple hardware upgrades, and would hand's down say it is the best I've ever owned and likely seen. As an avid DIY computer builder and IT professional I have worked on many computers in my lifetime and this case fits every need you could have short of super enthusiast builds.

First I'd like to mention that this box is HUGE. While considered a mid-tower it is nearly the size of a full tower lying down. This may be good or bad depending on your setup, but normally height is a problem more than depth. It is also remarkably heavy (around 35 lbs) but this speaks to the quality of the materials. This thing is built like a tank! It's held up through 3 moves, including 2 cross country trips in the back of a U-Haul without so much as a ding. The material quality is high, with thick aluminum construction, sound dampening foam, and powder coated paint (I don't have a single scratch on it). The only downside is the top panel is made of metal mesh with a plastic frame which feels flimsy. However, after a few years it hasn't broken or been damaged.

Inside the case is well designed and laid out. The vertical hot-swap hard disk drive (HDD) bays are convenient, however, it ships with only one HDD connector. If you want to install more than one HDD you'll need to buy more adapters or use a standard SATA cable.

Received this case from Amazon then built system with ASUS MOB.

After finishing the system, it was clear the power switch on the case did not work (the ASUS board was equipped with its own switch, so this was easy to test if it was MOB or the case). We then tested the power switch on the case. It turned out to be fine, but the mechanical button on the top was not engaging the switch underneath; the plastic button either does not engage the switch or the travel on the switch is too long for the plastic button that sits over it. We swapped the reset button with the power switch and it works fine, but now there is no reset switch.

I have read elsewhere that Silverstone's support is very poor, and one is left with returning the case for a new unit. That is big hassle for a small defect (although a very expensive case). I have contacted Silverstone and will update this review (and rating) as things progress (or not).

UPDATE 2/20/2014 - It has been four weeks since I contacted Silverstone about the broken switch. They said they would send a replacement part January 21, 2014. No replacement part has been delivered. I reduced the rating to two stars. I have contacted Silverstone again and will update this review as progress (or lack thereof) is made.

UPDATE 2/25/2014 - Silverstone support wrote back and said they have to order all parts from Taiwan and it takes at least 4-6 weeks. Add a couple of weeks for processing and you are looking at 6-8 weeks for simple replacement parts. I suppose that makes sense, but these are premium cases, you would think they would have a parts inventory in the USA, but it does not sound like it.
