Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Aoife is the daughter of and niece of members of the Clancy Brothers, the U.S.-based Irish stars of the '60s folk craze. Although she has clearly inherited the family preference for acoustic music, her approach owes more to the current crop of female singer-songwriters than to her Aran-sweatered forebears. Even when singing traditional material, she's an everywoman who could be from anywhere; her style doesn't owe a great debt to any single nationality. Her flowing alto is framed by tranquil, well-crafted acoustic arrangements; the sequences with a solo piano are especially effective. She has chosen an eclectic set list, which includes Australian poet Henry Lawson, the Weavers, and Ron Kavana. The closing duet with her dad is a charmer, but the most unforgettable track is "Across the Blue Mountains," an Appalachian ballad on which she displays an atypically gritty edge. --Christina Roden

Rambles: A Cultural Arts Magazine, September 12, 2002

"Anyone fond of a clear, sweet Irish voice stretched beyond the confines of her tradition will find plenty to like."

4.0 out of 5 stars Quietly Beautiful, October 20, 2002
This review is from: Silvery Moon (Audio CD)
I picked up a copy of this CD at the Dublin (Ohio) Irish Festival after hearing Aoife perform the wistful "Across the Blue Mountains." I had to hear more, and I'm not at all disappointed.

Aoife (former soloist with Cherish The Ladies) explores the classic and contemporary folk music of the British Isles and Appalachia on this third solo recording. The arrangements are appropriately soft and acoustic, as they naturally complement Aoife's voice. Several songs have a bluegrass sound - think of Alison Krauss & Union Station.

Highlights are without a doubt "Across the Blue Mountains" with the sweet harmony vocals of Julee Glaub and Aoife O'Donovan, and "Kisses Sweeter than Wine," a duet with her father, Bobby Clancy. "The Nightbird" and "Are You Sleepin', Maggie" also stand out as lightly Irish-tinged soft folk gems.

I gave a rating of 4 out of 5 stars because it would be nice to hear some more upbeat songs here, and I know Aoife could do an amazing job with those. This is quiet night music, which is fine, but it leaves you wanting a bit more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful Celtic, May 3, 2007

Serenity (On the beach) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Silvery Moon (Audio CD)
I first heard the title piece "Silvery Moon" on AOL Radio's Celtic station. As you know, many times one song that you love from an album doesn't always apply to the rest of the songs on the album. This is one very pleasant exception; I love every piece on "Silvery Moon."
I highly suggest it if you appreciate today's Celtic works.
