This radio uses accurate digital crystal controlled PLL (phase locked loop) tuning for all (7) NWR channels. Digital alert decoding. The S.A.M.E. (specific area message encoding) technology allows the radio to decode the digital broadcast information for all types of emergency, both civil (radiological, oil spills, and chemical releases) natural (weather, earthquakes, and volcano activities). New alerting receiver. Constantly monitors 1 of the 7 NOAA weather radio channels (162.400 to 162.550 MHz) for any emergency notifications, i.e. civil emergency, Amber alert. Alert siren. A 2 tone alert siren which sounds when an emergency alert is received. Location programming. Up to 20 locations can be programmed into the radio, ensuring that users are only alerted to Emergency Alerts which pertain to their specific area. Automatic test sentry. The NWR transmitters are tested weekly. Battery back up ensures operation during power failure. 12V AC DC 200ma (120V: 12V AC power adapter included). This item worked perfectly through our recent tornado and flood disasters, waking us up with a gentle beep beep beep, and then the broadcast alert announcement. When you set it up, it takes about 15 minutes to program, since you have to put in a county code, and then tick off which alerts you want to hear, e.g., mud slide, avalanche, flood, tornado, tidal wave, etc, and which level (warning, watch) for each. If someone can't figue out a VCR, they will hate this one. But its the only way to avoid all the annoying warnings that don't apply to your situation (e.g., you don't need to know about flood warnings if you live at higher elevations in your county).
