This is not the answer to eczema. My baby has severe eczema. We have tried soy-based and now this hydrolyzed formula. No improvement in eczema whatsoever. Only some allergic reactions are caused by cow milk protein, so don't listen to your doc when he says switching formula is one thing you have to do.
And this formula is so expensive! But it does nothing...

5.0 out of 5 stars This stuff is great!, June 19, 2007
This review is from: Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Nutrition Formula, Powder, With Iron, 1-Pound (454 g) (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
My son unfortunately was unable to breastfeed and could not tolerate any other formula out there. This may be expensive, but it has been worth every penny. It has solved his bellyaches and has helped tremendously with his colic symptoms. My husband and I noticed a huge difference in our son's behavior after just one bottle. We got our calm, good-natured baby back because of this formula :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver for parents and babies, May 25, 2009
This review is from: Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Nutrition Formula, Powder, With Iron, 1-Pound (454 g) (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Yes, it smells bad.

No, it doesnt taste bad. I licked my hand when i spilled it once and it was not nearly as bad as you would think due to the smell.

Yes it is extremely expensive, but you know what? It WORKS!

When you are up nightly due to a screaming unhappy child, or worse, when you see your child suffering with an allergic reaction or blood in their stool or other awful side effects of a milk allergy or intolerance you are willing to pay any amount of money to make sure your baby is happy and to in turn get some sleep as well.

This stuff works, and it is much cheaper then the next option of of Neocate or other amino acid based formulas.

Even if your child doesnt have a diagnosed milk allergy, but is extra gassy, colicky, or constipated, give this a try.

We started using this because my DD would get severe consitipation on ANY milk based formula. Even now at 10 months, when we tried again with regular formula we have the same problem, so back to alimentum we went.

I really do not care about the price or the smell because the alternative is either having a malnourished child or one that is in pain, both alternatives are much more expensive to me.

Before the breastfeeding Natzis get on my case- i know breast is an alternative BUT- not everyone chooses to breastfeed and not all babies do well on breastmilk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold, Full-bodied, Delicious, December 16, 2011
This review is from: Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Nutrition Formula, Powder, With Iron, 1-Pound (454 g) (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Something of an acquired taste, the protein hydrosylates are a class of formula long overlooked by everyday drinkers. Yet, for the daring, those such as Similac Alimentum can deliver a uniquely satisfying drinking experience.

The container is simple and utilitarian, which, while elegant in its minimalism, belies the marvelous menagerie of sensations that lies within. The hue of the formula itself is an enigmatic off-white, dim as is white when seen by only the light of a 40-watt bulb, reminding one of the wedding dress worn by Dickens' Miss Havisham, the color of virginal purity distressed and darkened by disappointment and age. On the nose, one is surprised to awaken to a bouquet of boldly cacophonous notes: cardamon, cassis, honey, tarragon and spice all broken down into their raw essences and released in gaseous form as if by the highly efficient digestive system of a cow, the scent intoxicating you like when you decided to stay inside the car with the windows closed at the station while you filled up on gas. On the palate, one savors a smooth, full-bodied, velvety texture while mineral and earthy flavors overwhelm and occupy the Zucotti Park that is your mouth. The finish echoes tart, smokey hints that linger indefinitely, evoking what you'd imagined it'd be like to kiss Lindsay Lohan. Not "Parent Trap" Lindsay Lohan because that would be totally illegal, more like present-day Lindsay Lohan, because even though she's aging prematurely and a total mess, you still wouldn't turn her down because you sympathized with her character in "Mean Girls" and, let's be honest, you have a thing for the crazy "used-up" type. Pairs well with salmon, asparagus, and rice cereal.

5.0 out of 5 stars great formula for sensitive babies, November 8, 2007
This review is from: Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Nutrition Formula, Powder, With Iron, 1-Pound (454 g) (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Okay... first I will give you my history, my daughter was born at 36 weeks and put on regular Similac Advance, she puked like a marathon puker at the hospital before they put her on the Similac Sensitive (lactose free) that helped. At about 2 weeks, vomitting again, but only about once or twice a day. It was pretty projectile and I worried about the anatomy of her digestive system. After an upper GI we learned that all was well, but that she did have reflux. After the reglan, she was still vomitting pretty agressively so I mentioned the formula. My dr. agreed that trying Alimentum would be a good thing - well, she is now almost 4 months and NO MORE PROJECTILE VOMITTING!!! I am thrilled to not have to worry about that anymore. The formula is stinky, but oh well... my baby is comfy! Recently, my daughter has been getting hungry more often (still drinking 4 - 5 oz every 4 hrs) and the dr suggested I try her on Similac Organic so that she can maybe be full enough to sleep thru the night. I am tempted but oh so scared!!! I know Alimentum is very thin and probably not filling her up, but it does her tummy good! I was very impressed with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, September 2, 2008
This review is from: Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Nutrition Formula, Powder, With Iron, 1-Pound (454 g) (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
After 3 weeks of using similac advance, the one that was given from the hospital, my son broke out in rashes and diarrhea one after another. He cried all the time and had very painful gas. He's allergic to Sensitive and Soy based. So I gave him this and it worked magically! Within 24 hours his rashs cleared up and diarrhea was gone. Limited his bowel movement to once or sometimes twice a day. I love this product, yes it smells really bad and very pricey. But he is happy with it. Oh I bought his formula from www.mzmed.com Much cheaper than most website I know of. Check it out......a can of 16oz is less than 20 bucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God for Alimentum!, December 31, 2007
This review is from: Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Nutrition Formula, Powder, With Iron, 1-Pound (454 g) (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
At 3 wks old my son was colic. The doctor asked us to try Similac Alimentum for a couple of weeks to see if there was improvement. After seeing the price of course my first thoughts were IT BETTER WORK FOR THAT MUCH PER CAN! Well after about 2 days there was a drastic improvement with my son's temperament. He still gets a little fussy (what baby doesn't) but there are no more 5 hour screaming marathons until 1 AM!

The formula does not smell all that great but it is far less foamy when mixed compared to the original. Also, you can get great deals online to save money! i-medica.com sells the formula wholesale with free standard shipping. 132.90 for 6 16oz cans, (about $22 per can vs $28).

If your baby is just starting the Alimentum, really give it a good try before giving up!

4.0 out of 5 stars It works. Damn it., October 10, 2010

This review is from: Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Nutrition Formula, Powder, With Iron, 1-Pound (454 g) (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
I have preemie twins, and unfortunately they weren't able to breastfeed due to their extended hospital stay after birth. They were given Neosure in the hospital and once they got home. They do still, in fact, receive two bottles of it a day. They have HORRIBLE reflux. They are taking the max dosage of Prevacid they can receive for their weight (I hate to do any medication, but don't judge me - they truly need it). Despite a consultation with a GI specialist, urologist and surgeon, nothing can be found wrong with them internally (thank God). However, their constant crying and discomfort has had me at a loss for a couple of weeks - even though we try to give them lesser amounts more often to avoid excess gas, burp after every ounce, AND keep them in an upright position for at least 20 minutes after every feeding. Well, I had purchased a HUGE lot of Neosure because I found a fantastic deal on it (about $8/can). So I really hated to ask the pediatrician about trying a different formula due to possibly wasting the Neosure, but since money isn't as important as my boys' comfort, I did. He said to try the Alimentum. I was not happy at all to pay $27 for a 16 oz can (That's why I knocked off a star - yes, it is less expensive on Amazon, but I didn't want to buy a case before trying. Even so, it is highly expensive formula). However, one day later - they are different babies. I knew their little personalities were that of smiles, but they have never had them for more than five minutes at a time. This stuff has made all the difference. That's where the "damn it" comes from. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad something works, but I was really hoping it might be a regular formula that treats fussiness or gas, but alas, it is this. In addition, it's thinner so they drink more of it. I plan to keep the bill for all of the money spent on this premium formula and they can start working it off when they are able to start doing chores. (that's a joke for people who don't have much of a sense of humor) Oh, and I think it doesn't smell nearly as bad as any other formula. I think it smells as if you made a soup of nothing but saltine crackers.

5.0 out of 5 stars INSURANCE WILL PAY for hypoallergenic formula!!, May 27, 2009
Hypoallergenic formula was necessary for our daughter's acid reflux.

We found out from a friend that most insurance companies will completely cover the cost of hypoallergenic formula, either by reimbursing you what you've spent on it, or if you get it as a prescription through your pediatrician. Ours did!

Many doctors don't know this, so they don't know to give a prescription for the formula. Call your insurance company today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for sensitive tummies!, January 5, 2009
By
This review is from: Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Nutrition Formula, Powder, With Iron, 1-Pound (454 g) (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
This formula works wonders! My son went through 4 different formulas before we found this life saver! It is broken down enough so it is easy for even the most sensitive tummies to digest. It is great for babies with colic or allergies to the protein in milk.

The downfalls to this formula are:

-Similac only makes the powder formula in the 16oz can which means you go through it faster and have to buy either multiple cans or keep running to the store once a week for it.

-Also it is a bit on the expensive side. It is more expensive than the regular formula and usually runs anywhere from 25-26.50 a can.

-It is very stinky and very sticky.

Although it has a few cons about it, if you have a baby with a sensitive digestive system this is definitely the best formula on the market! Our son is a happy camper thanks to Similac Alimentum!.
