Editorial Reviews

Small Sails is a music and film making collective from Portland, Oregon. The music is a gorgeous post-electronic tribal thing and the films are performed live at their shows using original reel-to=reel footage and dual projectors. A field of dandelions plowed over, inner-city kids jumping double dutch in gritty streets, birds and waterfalls, playground vocals, clicky electronics and warm, spacey melodies - that's what Small Sails looks and sounds like. Their new music is different, too' chanting, humming vocals hint at tangibility while remaining half-submerged; rhythms are a baby-bouncing jumble of eclectic percussion and twittering electronics; and achingly gorgeous melodies get stripped down to the still-gleaming bone. The words are sparse and nonsensical, but somehow such ambiguity it what helps make Small Sails so compelling, both on record and in person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Album to "Cruise" Along To September 17, 2007
Format:Audio CD
As soon as you listen to the first track (Somnambulist) you can't help but feel every muscle in your body relax and get taken away. Picture how great it was to be driving in the midnight sky with the windows down and this music instantly takes you back there. Great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful piece of music June 25, 2007
Format:Audio CD
i bought this album for $1.99 at the local record store just by appearance and i wasn't expecting something this good. simple wordless vocals, soft melodies, and smooth transitions. this album is a beautiful piece of music. i would pay $20.00 for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, see them live! April 2, 2007
Format:Audio CD
This album is so refreshing. Is this the future of music? Why, yes it is. If you like other bands that utilize the vibraphone, you will find this album exciting. See them live, if you can. It is truly an amazing experience. Very ambient, very melodic, all the time!

2.0 out of 5 stars Hey ya la la la hey lala ya...........uhhhh NO. April 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I'm sorry. After seeing all these 5 star reviews I don't mean to discredit the band and all and I think the music itself is pretty fantastic but here's my story. After seeing a compilation on Moodgadget with bands I like, like The Reflecting Skin and Mux Mool, I thought I'd check out the rest of the artists on there. The first was Small Sails. So, I went to Spotify typed in Small Sails and at the top right it shows other bands Small Sails are being compared to - And there, right in the top corner was one of my favorite bands of all bands: Populous With Short Stories and I thought, "NO WAY!". I knew it probably wouldn't be quite as phenomenal, but I'm a music lover, not a hater so I listened to every song. The music is great and for me, instantly likeable. The problem? These goofy singers who can't sing who must've watched too many Sesame Street programs while growing up we're non-stop chanting out "Yeah ya, yeah ya, la la la la la's" in nearly every song like some bad Paul Simon loop from the lost Simon & Garfunkel album you would never want to hear. And I love Simon & Garfunkel! I've got this thing about singing and my theory is simple: 1. If you can't sing, 2. Don't know how to, OR most importantly, 3. Are taking away something from the music that was nearly perfect before you started singing, then you SHOULDN'T BE SINGING!!!!!!!!! Except for like 2 songs of every release I could find by them, this happens! And it's annoying. With that said, I put Small Sails on my list of bands to look into when they put out new releases hoping one of their girlfriends, producer-friends or label mates tells them maybe they should do an INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM JUST FOR FUN! If that ever happens, I promise you I will buy it..and probably love it! But I just can't get past the lame vocal things going on all over the place here like it's some hippie version of a Bobby McFerrin record. Sorry, Small Sails.
