Steve Wilkes is the drummer for the world renowned Empire Brass Quintet, and a Berklee College of Music Professor. As a recipient of the Japan Foundation Uchida Fellowship, Steve traveled throughout Asia in 1991 and1994. His studies with the legendary Japanese Taiko troupes Kodo, O Gion Daiko and particularly Seido Kobayashi and O Edo Sukeroku Taiko inspired him to build a band around the indigenous backbeat of the modern world: the drumset. Six Drumsets released their debut, self-titled CD in 1997 and will be releasing it's follow-up, Simmer, on April 2nd, 2002. This CD was produced by Steve with co-production and engineering by Rob Jaczko

This review is from: Simmer (Audio CD)
What Steve Wilkes and Six DrumSets have been able to achieve is nothing short of ground breaking. Steve has fused his knowledge of composition, world music and rhythm. This is the work of a visonary, to create art on an instrument previously unseen as artistic...is impressive to say the least. He has shown the world how to view the rhythmic and melodic possibilities on the drumset and likely opened up the doors of perception to a whole new field of research. He is truely a hidden gem in the percussive arts family.
