I think that the reason that some people are giving this pillow bad reviews is that the description does not properly explain the feel of this pillow. 5.0 out of 5 stars good reviews vs. bad reviews explained, October 20, 2007
I think that the reason that some people are giving this pillow bad reviews is that the description does not properly explain the feel of this pillow. This is not a HARD pillow (what most would consider firm.) It is also not quite a SOFT pillow (no resistance beneath your head.) It is a SPRINGY pillow. It could also be described as bouncy.

Let me draw an analogy to shoes. A Birkenstock sandal has a firm supportive footbed--but no bounce. A cushioned slipper has a soft footbed--but still no bounce. An athletic shoe has a springy footbed. It is flexible, slightly hard, and has bounce. This pillow would be analogous to a less hard (but very springy) athletic shoe.

This is my all-time favorite pillow. It does need to be aired out for a while to be rid of the latex smell. I like it much better than memory foam. With memory foam you just sink. With latex, your head is cradled like in a hammock.

I think those who wrote bad reviews actually wanted a different type of pillow. This is an excellent pillow--you just need to know what you are getting. When it comes to firmness, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being soft and 10 being hard, this pillow is a 3. For springiness, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being flaccid and 10 being a balloon or a super bouncy ball, this pillow is about a 7. The manufacturer just needs a better writer to describe their product.

I found that this product had no real description of how it felt. I have not slept on a latex pillow so this was new to me. I didn't like how it felt and it was a bit weird to sleep on. Almost like sleeping on a balloon. From all of the great reviews I was expecting something much better. I can't say this is a bad pillow due to the fact it does offer good support but being a smaller person, this pillow just felt too big and pushy. I guess latex pillows just aren't for me. I wanted everyone to understand what it means when people say this pillow is springy so I hope this helps. You never know until you sleep on one whether or not you'll like it. I also want to note this pillow is larger than a standard queen size pillow. It was 4 inches larger than my other pillow and barely fit into the pillow cases.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most wonderful pillow ever!, January 15, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've been looking for a foam pillow, remembering as a teen I had one and loved it. I never can find a good pillow--my neck hurts, my TMJ would get worse, or my ears would be sore. I have had a very hard time finding a good one, and was thrilled when I found this on amazon. Latex foam pillows are far superior in comfort to the popular "memory foam," which I think is so uncomfortable--I mean, it smooshes down and stays there--how is that support? Latex foam, on the other hand, is light, but so supportive. It's springy--it's gently lifting you up. Anyway, I've had it for about a week and slept better than I have in years. I absolutely love it! Also, I can't believe how fast I got it. When I ordered it it was out of stock, and I chose free shipping. Had it in a few days. Wow! Thanks Amazon. (PS The latex smells a little funny at first, but the smell was completely gone within a few days.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not as expected., March 16, 2007
I go through pillows faster than anyone I've ever met. My wife can't understand how I destroy pillows inside, sometimes, less than a week, but usually within a couple of months. They flatten and separate and clump up and I can't sleep... it's horrible. So after some research online the Tallalay Latex Foam Pillow looked to be my saviour. My perfect pillow. It's supportive, it will never flatten, it's comfortable and it won't separate and clump! Where have you been all my life.

So I ordered the Queen Size Firm pillow seen here with great expectations! I am sorry to say that I'm quite a bit disappointed. While it's true that it is very comfortable and soft, and springs back and doesn't clump, what it doesn't do is support. The foam compresses so easily under pressure that I am horrified that they can use the word Firm to describe it. The pillow just isn't thick enough or firm enough. The pillow is only about 7" thick and compresses to about 1" under your head. As a side sleeper this just isn't good. Now, for back sleepers this pillow is fantastic. When I lay on my back it is the most comfortable pillow I have ever used, but then that's what a SOFT pillow is for.

So my quest for the perfect pillow will continue. What would be perfect for me would be to find a similar tallalay foam latex pillow that is truly firm. Perhaps about 8-9" thick with a bit let compressibility or denser foam. They should still sell this model but certainly not with a Firm description.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two versions of this pillow are sold under the same name!, June 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Simmons Beautyrest Authentic Talalay Latex Foam Firm Support Pillow (Kitchen)
Length:: 0:17 Mins

I purchased this pillow in February 2010 and fell in love with it. My standard-size pillow is very supportive and resilient, and is by far the best pillow I have ever owned. This was also my girlfriend's favorite pillow and she wanted one too, so I decided to purchase one for her. Three months later I purchased the same exact pillow (same name and brand, same customer reviews, standard size, firm support, both shipped via Amazon Prime) and was surprised to see that the two pillows offered very different levels of support. While my first pillow was very supportive and comfortable this new one provided very little support, so I decided to remove the cotton pillow case and see what was causing the difference in support. In the supportive pillow there were small holes that were uniform throughout the whole pillow that were just a bit smaller in diameter than a pencil. In the unsupportive pillow these holes were two times the size. I find it misleading that pillows that offer drastically different levels of support are being sold under the same name with the same customer reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect pillow, November 9, 2006

This pillow is very lightweight but amazingly supportive and soft. I had been having trouble with all sorts of pillows. Some would lose their fluffiness and hurt my neck, some were supportive but too hard and hurt my ear. This pillow is a dream come true.

This is a very nice latex foam pillow. The construction is good, the foam is resistant to tear, and the outside case is good. Recommended even over more expensive foam latex pillows (which have slighty denser foam). It is not really that firm especially compared to a Tempurpedic which is REALLY FIRM! I strongly recommend to buy 2 pillows for every person as explained below.
As an owner of 10 latex pillows right now (I am replacing them all) and having used them exclusively for 40 years, I know that these pilllows change over time. When they are new, I can sleep using just the one pillow as it is very puffy at first. Within a month or so, the pillow will start to compress until after a year or two, it is down to about half its brand new height. That is also when it becomes a great pillow after it is really broken in. That is why I suggest that you have two pillows. In about 10-12 years they are getting PRETTY thin and the faom starts to yellow and crumble. Time for a new one. One nice thing is that once they have been broken in, they bend in half really well to prop your head for reading, TV, romance.. My whole family always packs our own pillows on any road trip, including hotels, family, wherever.
Want a pillow that never changes, get a memory foam pillow but just do not expect the comfort of these great pillows.
EDIT EDIT EDIT Well, it has been a few years now, and these pillows are holding up GREAT, much better than I have had before. No sign of wear and tear and I mash them about too. Add another half a star for durability!

2.0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent product quality, April 6, 2009
This review is from: Simmons Beautyrest Authentic Talalay Latex Foam Firm Support Pillow (Kitchen)
Due to minor neck pain, I was looking for a pillow that would support my neck when I sleep on my back. I purchased this pillow in November of 2008 and really liked it. It was firm, supportive, and exactly what I was looking for in a pillow. However, when I purchased the same pillow from Amazon in March, 2009 for my wife, it was vastly different. The second pillow was packaged in the same wrapper and had the same labels, but had absolutely no support or firmness. Unlike the first pillow, this one flattens down paper thin and really doesn't function as a basic pillow. My guess is that the company (Simmons) has problems with quality control. Because Amazon will not allow you to return opened products, my advice is to give this pillow a try, but avoid removing the plastic cover until you determine whether you receive the paper-thin variety or the supportive variety.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great pillow, but firm isn't firm enough., May 30, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this pillow because I remembered one I had as a child that was a firm foam rubber. I loved that pillow, and somehow it was lost during a move. I've never seen another one like it, until I found this one.

It's pricey at $49.99 but free shipping through Amazon helps. Mine cost $38 in May 2007, and I probably wouldn't have bought it if it had been $50. In summer weather this pillow makes my head sweat more than a regular fiberfill pillow, too. I like that this pillow pops right back into shape without fluffing, and that it's anti-dust mite, which is good for allergy sufferers. It comes with a washable zippered pillowcase - don't wash the pillow itself, just the cover!

The biggest drawback for me is that it's labelled "Firm" but it's not nearly hard enough. I bought two of them, and hubby likes his well enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Firm support does not equal hard pillow, August 2, 2007
By
Saracen (Portland, ME) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The only word to describe these pillows is "perfect". They are without question the most comfortable pillows I have ever slept on, and I do mean sleep. No more waking up, punching the pillow back into the shape I want, then trying to fall back asleep. Now I fall asleep and don't wake up until the alarm goes off. The pillows are soft and extremely comfortable, but don't equate soft with lack of support, or conversely firm with hard. Your head sinks softly into the foam and is practically cradled by the foam, but under your head the foam compresses and provides the firm support advertised, again firm, but not hard. When I move, roll over, or whatever, the foam instantly springs back up into shape, unlike memory foam. I don't want a pillow where the shape of my head is deeply pressed into the foam for many seconds as the foam slowly resumes its original shape; these latex foam pillows respond to every movement of my head instantly. As I said, the only word needed to describe these pillows is "perfect".
