4.0 out of 5 stars A good place to begin, February 27, 2009
This review is from: Simmons SD7K Electronic Drum Set (Standard)
This was my first drum kit. I loved this kit in the beginning but now I am not as impressed.

I was looking for a budget electronic kit. I experimented at Guitar Center to find the right set in this price range. For the money I spent I don't think I could have done better.

Pros
1. It is a good kit for the price you pay.
2. The kit is easy to setup and adjust to your liking.
3. The pads are soft with some velocity sensitivity.
4. It works with Garage Band for Mac, but with a catch.

Cons
1. This is my practice kit. I would never use them on stage because they don't sound like real drums. The standard drum selection sounds flat and out of tune.
2. The pad sensitivity is primary in the exact center of the pad. The further you move away the more drastic the difference.
3. The snare pad does not feel anything like a real drum when you play.
4. The Hi-Hat clicks are inaudible. If you are playing a jazz or blues like swing you will lose this effect.
5. In 6 months of playing I have two pads that only trigger when hit in the center.
6. It works with Garage band but you have to configure and assign each pad. Very time consuming.

Overall, I have more cons them pros but I still like this kit. I would recommend this as a learner kit and because of where you live a real kit is out of the question. If you want to play rock music and just need something quit to beat on I think this is a OK buy. If you are looking for a kit to play live, I would choose something else.

1.0 out of 5 stars Under no circumstances should you buy this drum set, May 28, 2010
By klnosaj "klnosaj" (Berkeley, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Simmons SD7K Electronic Drum Set (Standard)
I've owned this set for fewer than six months and it's already breaking down. The bass drum pad quit working after about 12 weeks (just after the warranty expired from the store where I purchased it) and the "dual zone" snare quit responding about a week later. Mind you, this is after light use: it's a practice kit I keep in my office so I can do some rudiments and patterns to help me think (or not think,as the case might be) for a few minutes when I'm stuck on a problem at work.

I returned it to where I originally bought it (Guitar Center) since it was still under manufacturer's warranty and was told they had so many returns on this set that they didn't handle them in store any longer. In other words, Guitar Center was so overwhelmed with returns on this set during the manufacturer's warranty that they had to stop the courtesy of facilitating returns and exchanges.

It's been extremely difficult to get Simmons to respond to my problem: the 1-800 number they set up *just to respond to complaints about failed pads for this set* is ALWAYS busy and despite promises on the recorded message I have yet to hear from them. In short, I bought a $450 paper weight.

A couple of decades ago, when my Mom was part of the working poor, she worked overtime and busted her hump to buy me my first drum kit. Every time I look at this heap of rubber and metal in the corner of my office all I can think about are the people out there who had to scrimp and save to finally get a drum set and this is what they end up with: crap that doesn't work backed by customer service that doesn't work.

Simmons = fail.
