I needed a spotting scope for making my time at the rifle range more than just about slinging lead -- but I didn't want to spend a ton of money. At my local sporting goods/outdoor store, the Simmons Blazer 20-60x60 was the best apparent compromise in price, magnification power and objective lens size. It was a bonus that it came with a tripod.

First, the included tripod is junk. It's too cheap and lacks the stability to make me comfortable with the scope on top of it. I'm constantly worried that it's going to wobble over and cause the scope to break. It only took using it two or three times before I spent another $25 on a table-top tripod from Slik.

Second, even though the objective lens is a 60mm glass, it doesn't let in as much light as you would expect. My 10x42 rifle scope is far brighter.

Aside from this, considering the money spent the scope does exactly what I need it to do. I'm NOW able to easily see .223 sized holes in the target paper at 100 yards and can even make out .308 & .30-06 sized holes in the target paper at 200 yards. It saves a great deal of time being able to review my shots from the firing line instead of having to walk down to the targets to review each string of fire.

I replaced a weaker Bushnell scope I'd had since I'm shooting at much farther ranges now. I've been very happy with the Simmons rifle scopes I own & have had occasion to require customer service which was outstanding. Simmons may not be considered as hi-caliber an optic as some brands or models costing ten times as much, but for the shooter or hunter who hits the range a few times a month or hunts a few times a year, they're a great value that you won't be afraid to take into the field. I've been happy with all Simmons products I've come in contact with.

This scope was shipped very quickly & came in a hard case, with a soft case for field carry in hunting applications. The front lens cap has a compass built in (a handy feature if you take it hunting). The image is crisp, bright & clear out to the 300 yards I've used it at so far. I'm going to try to get out to a 1000 yard rage, but not possible at this point. The tripod includes a quick detachable head which really makes set-up & take-down a breeze. I don't believe you'll find a better scope within this price range from any vendor & recommend it highly to anyone on-the-fence about making a purchase.

I bought a Barska Benchmark 25-125x88 from Overstock. It was cheaply made and got so blurry, that the .22 bullet hole at 165 yds was not visable. So I returned it thinking maybe some defect. When the replacement arrived, same thing. So it went back and I got refunded the $113. No charges for the returns. Thank you.
This Simmions is a much better scope,you can tell just by picking it up. From one end to the other. Much better tripod that adjusts, someting the Barska didn't. Along with a nice bag and hard case. And it was even cheeper than the "Blurry Barska Benchmark" (say that 3 times fast....LOL.) The .22 hole is now visable at 165 yds.
:)
Buy the Simmions instead of the Barska.

Yours truley;
The 165yd plunker.

This scope came in an impressive carry case with tripod, scope bag, cleaning cloth and it was all in a hard durable case.
The scope itself is excellent. I'm not sure why other people said it was dark, I used mine in dusk, dawn, and middle of the day shooting situations and it was fine. Maybe they had lemons or just couldn't get the sweet spot. It has two separate focus rings. One to take you from 20-60x magnification and then a fine focus for when you get there. Using it at 300 yards I could still see the target really well, enough to tell both impacts on a black target and make adjustments accordingly. I also used this with 60 Pack - 6" Reactive Splatter Targets - GlowShot - Multi Color - See Your Hits Instantly - Gun & Rifle Targets - Glow Shot - Seach Glowshot for all our 6", 8" & 10" Packswhere it really shines. I would recommend bigger than 6" targets though.

For hunting purposes its great too, though really only if set in a blind or stand where you have minimal movement. The provided tripod feels cheap and flimsy, but is quite functional still. As with all scopes you'll get jumpy movement unless you have a really expensive spotting scope with gyroscopes in it when holding them. Personally when hunting I don't think you need a spotting scope at all, a good pair of binoculars is all that is really needed. This will do for hunting purposes but shines for sighting in on a range. Unless you want to play Scout Sniper with your buddies of course.

More on the tripod, it features telescoping arms so it can be set at a height of about 4 and a half feet all the way down to about 1 foot.

For the money, this spotting scope is a pretty good deal. No, its optics aren't as sharp as my $900 Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope which I have tried to use as a spotting scope, but it works well at 100 yards and is much less cumbersome. And the hard case is a nice touch, making transport a lot simpler than my M-C. Three stars because it does get a little difficult to use at full magnification. And yes, the tripod is flimsy - is that a shocker for a scope at this price?
