These are perfect shoes for a float trip where you dont have to do a lot of wading. For daylong wading ion large rock get your boots for ankle support

I bought these wading shoes on line without trying them on and was skeptical about their traction. I was thoroughly happy with the traction in both big rocky bottoms and moss. I also purchased the screw in Hard-Bite Star-Cleats for the wading shoes.(8 on each shoe, There is a diagram for spacing out the cleats on Simms's website.) I strongly advise this if you will be spending alot of time in the river. If you use Star-Cleats you must add an extra inner-sole that you can buy at any drug store because you will definitely feel the screw coming through. If you still have a problem with this you can move the cleat in to a different area that has a lesser pressure point on the bottom of your foot. I did not have any problems with gravel rock coming into the shoe. I do not recommend the Rip Raps for long hikes 5- 6 miles or fishing the rockier rivers. I fished in the Madison, Wind River and South Fork Shoshone in these and my feet were getting beat up especially my ankles. I should have used a heavier boot type shoe. These shoes should be great for smaller streams and slow-water rivers where you can drive up and fish for a few hours.

Just started fly fishing again and looking for something easier than full waders for summer months but better than hiking/water sandals. These gripped extremely well in stream wading through substantial current in the forks of the Snoqualmie in PNW. Didn't have any issues with gravel or sand but have only used a few times so far. Did not use socks when wearing and comfort was good. Very happy with these.
