4.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Rosemary Sutcliff books, January 16, 2001

This review is from: Simon (Hardcover)
This book is one of my favorite Rosemary Sutcliff books. It is about the title character, Simon, who is a young man during the English civil war. It tells about Simon's involvement in the war as as solder for Parliment and his relationship with his best friend, who is a Royalist(and so on the opposite side). I like this book for several reasons. In common with Rosemary Sutcliff's other books, you almost feel you are there from the descriptions and the characters are very interesting. The story is interesting and unique and is about a period of history there is not much fiction on. It has a wonderful theme of loyalty and friendship which is treated in a very unsappy way. It also gives a balanced and sympathetic portrayal of Puritans, neither vilifying or idolizing them. I think the book leaves you with a quietly happy feeling. It is a book that deserves more exposure.
