Book Description

"But Daddy, who will live with me in heaven?"

Doctor Simon Bailey has everything a man could ever want.

Then his beautiful daughter is diagnosed with Leukemia.

He can almost accept her impending death.

He can almost accept the fact that he will have to live without her.

But he cannot stand the thought of his little girl having to face death alone.

He answers her innocent question in a moment of desperation, testing his marriage, his professional judgment and his sanity to the limit.

As cracks form in Simon's previously perfect family, we wonder, as do his loved ones ... will he really make the ultimate sacrifice?

Combining poignant moments of both humour and pain, 'Simon's Choice' is a penetrating account of parenthood at the sharp-end.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

The daughter of a successful novelist, Charlotte Castle considers herself 'chronically unemployable' and admits to being astounded that her book has had such a positive reception. "To be honest, I started writing 'Simon's Choice' out of a mixture of genuine desire to explore the horror of losing a child and a fair amount of desire to get out of mopping the kitchen floor. That people want to read it is wonderful." A school governor for her daughter's primary school and actively involved in her local 'Community Action Group', Charlotte juggles writing with cleaning up after a man whom she says is "completely unfamiliar with the term 'washing basket'", her cat and her two children.

5.0 out of 5 stars I predict a best seller.... July 16, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
Dr. Simon Bailey, his wife Melissa, and their daughter Sarah are so close a family unit, they call themselves "Team Bailey". Nothing can stop them not even when little Sarah gets diagnosed with leukemia. The family fights through, and Sarah goes into remission. However, when the leukemia returns full force, Team Bailey is no match, and it becomes clear that Sarah will not make it. Suddenly, everything falls apart, because Sarah is the glue holding it all together; when she weakens, so does that bond. Before you know it, Simon and Melissa have a strained relationship, he is admitting to drinking far too much, and now, he is faced with making the decision no father should ever have to make, about a promise he makes to Sarah.

Very rarely do I have the opportunity to review a book before all the rest of the world is raving about it. Once in a while I get lucky, but never so much as when I found Charlotte Castle. This book is a rare find, a pure treasure, and when it inevitably becomes a best seller, I can say I knew it all along.

As soon as I started reading, I was immediately hooked. The characters of Simon, Sarah, and Melissa pull you in from the very first page of the book, and you end up thinking of them as real people. You love them, at times you hate them, you smile with them, you weep for them. These are not mere characters to Charlotte Castle, you can tell she really loves them; it shows in the writing.

As the story unfolds, you are totally invested as a reader. I literally heard the dialogue in my head, which was fun because I got to hear it in a lovely British accent. And I swear at times, I could feel Porridge, the dog, snuggling at my feet. The story wraps around you like a blanket on a rainy day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simon's Choice - a delight from start to finish! July 16, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
This book made me smile, laugh out loud and cry, whilst encouraging me to delve a little deeper into my own beliefs. The characters are people you feel for and hope for, and the writing style makes it hard to find a place to stop. The dilemma of the father Simon, builds suspense through the novel and leaves you guessing right to the last page at to what his decision will be, all the time changing my own mind about what I would do! A fantastic read that left me wanting to talk about it with everyone I saw! If you like anything in the Jodi Picoult style you'll love this!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'll never forget this! July 16, 2010
By MDEyler
Format:Kindle Edition
Respectable, responsible Simon Bailey, answers the most wrenching question of his life, but the consequences evoke waves of discord that take him to the brink of his sanity.

Charlotte Castle's intense new novel, Simon's Choice, takes us into the heart of a loving family in crisis. Simon and Melissa Bailey must find new ways to cope with the waking nightmare of the childhood Leukemia that's riddling their beloved little daughter, Sarah. Hope breezes intermittently around family and friends then, disappears just as they start to rely on it. Each of them grasp at the fragments of happier times as they are stretched beyond breaking. But time moves on, as does the strength that sometimes visits their little family and their faithful rock of a dog, Porridge.

Readers slip comfortably into the lives of caring, likable characters and walk with them through challenges no loving family would ever want to face.

Choices in life rarely wear labels of right and wrong, but Simon's Choice is one book that readers will surely find worthy of their time. This book rushes in to grasp the heart of the reader and never lets go. I'll never forget it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Contrived ending January 18, 2012
By DONNA
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the first part of the book, but had some problems with the later parts. As another reviewer said, it was in some ways not convincingly fleshed out, perhaps because the conflict was driven by the wife's fury, but we saw far less of her actual processing of the situation than of Simon's, and not enough of the reasons behind her extreme reactions. Eventually, he was portrayed as so confused, that I lost most of my sympathy for him.

However what really made me give it three stars, rather than four, was that the ending was so contrived, and, for me, completely unbelievable in a book that had presented itself as realistic. I was really ok with the book up to the last page or two but such an unlikely and sentimental ending spoiled it for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a read. June 28, 2012

Enjoyed this book very much. A very thought provoking and at times heart wrenching story. It didn't take long at all to read... don't know if this is because I enjoyed it so much I found every excuse to sit down and read a few pages whenever I could, or if it was because it could have used just a bit more character development. This would be my only complaint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching Story April 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A sad story that will tug at your hearts strings and will demand that you keep the tissues close. I cannot imagine how many families go through this experience in life, face the same dilemma's as Simon and end up with the same result - not only a lost child but a lost family!
I did find Melissa and Simon reacted as most parents would however I did battle to understand where all Melissa's dissatisfaction with Simon came from. I thought that her treatment of her husband and Sarah's father was somewhat hash. Definitely worth the money paid!!
