About the Author

Lisa Graham Keegan has a passion for family - her family and the families of those who strive for a better future for their children. Her refreshing approach to the issues of modern family is rooted in her belief that we have the family we are given and the family we build, and that all families exist to support the unique gifts and purposes of each member.
Lisa grew up in Arizona, riding horses and learning about life in a family steeped in commitment to service. Lisa's family has been involved in political and community leadership locally and nationally for generations. She was educated at Stanford University and Arizona State University, worked as a speech pathologist specializing in brain injury at the VA hospital, then ran for and was elected to the Arizona legislature and subsequently as Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction. Lisa has become a national authority on what is right and what is wrong with education in America, and has advised policy leaders at all levels.
In the course of her work, Lisa served on both of John McCain's presidential campaigns, leading his education policy team. She also worked on the George W. Bush transition team in 2000, and was interviewed by President-elect Bush to be his Secretary of Education before the president chose Roderick Paige to take the job - a choice Lisa heartily approved of.
She shares ownership in the Keegan Company with her husband John, a former military officer, civil engineer, legislator, mayor and judge. Lisa's work includes analyzing education policy, giving advice, writing and speaking; and her favorite work obsession is National School Choice Week. Lisa and John are also grateful members of the Episcopal diocese in Phoenix.
Her family life has been blessed with a close knit clan of children, stepchildren, children-in-law, grandchildren, former spouses, cousins, aunts, uncles and dear friends who come together to support each other as a family. The Keegans have five beautiful children, two children-in-law, two grandsons so far...and they are deeply proud of the contributions all of their children make to their own communities.

I loved this book! I was expecting to read a much more policy-oriented book, given that Keegan is a former elected official and a well-known education reform leader. This book was about so much more than policy. It was a tapestry of very personal, unique and biographical stories -- many of them funny and some of them emotional or suspenseful -- that come together nicely to prove Keegan's powerful point: you can take the gifts and challenges that life throws at you and make the best of it for you and your kids.

It's rare to find such a direct and heartfelt book by someone who has lived in the public eye. Keegan's positive outlook on life and her graceful approach shine through. And there's a ton of great advice throughout!

Many who work so hard at changing education know Lisa - but this book solidifies her incredibly positive approach to making change and her intense focus on our children and what they can do for the world. If you are raising children, this book is such a profound gift. We are not perfect and raising children is hard work but not impossible. As Lisa points out, it is the most rewarding work you will do.

This is a very raw look back at one amazing women's work in creating opportunities for her children, letting them be who they are, and translating that focus to all children. Thank you Lisa - I truly loved this!

Simple Choices' begins with Lisa Keegan's memoir of building a family through divorce, abandonment, adoption, mental impairment, sexual identity and all the challenges life has to offer. Rather than weakening the family, Keegan shows how these trials can help build a stronger family bond. The book concludes with advice on how to nurture children to lead a life of service.

The forward to the book is written by Kate Keegan McClendon and Annie Graham, Keegan's step daughter and daughter respectively. They articulate the sense of family and service that Keegan imbued in her extended family.

This is a wonderful personal interest story and great parenting book, filled with common sense solutions to the challenges of forging a family.

Lisa Keegan is a stalwart defender of choice for children and their parents so I assumed that much of her book would be focused on her efforts for school reform. Even though I personally know Lisa what the reader gets is a better understanding of the principles and personal philosophy that forms the basis for Lisa's political and policy perspective. Often in a very humorous and always graceful style, you learn about the people and things in her life that have created the person she is and the positions she takes. Whether you agree philosophically or not with her, this is a wonderful story of people with trials and tribulations like all of us experience who simply use every situation as a way to learn more about themselves, others and life itself. The book makes you laugh, cry, reflect a lot on your own life and how you live it. As an educator, the book affirms for me the genuine basis for her advocacy for school reform. It affirms that her perspective is not from a political point of view but a humanitarian one, from a mom's point of view - the person who wants all of her children and yours too to be the best that they can be. I am going to send a copy to each of my four kids because Lisa also has some sage advice on raising children. She doesn't claim to be a child behavior expert but she presents common sense, kind, and purposeful recommendations that have worked for her and her family while they met the challenges of their life. This is not a preachy type story but one that is about real people trying to do their part to make the world a better place. Without a doubt, Lisa Keegan accomplished that mission. A great book that you can read in one night and well worth the time.
