One of the things I loved about this book was that you didn't have to spend a lot of extra money on spices that you'll use one time. The author was brilliant to incorporate ready-made items that you can use for a recipe.. then use the remainder for something else. The book itself is laid out well which makes it easy to read. The only drawback would the spiral plastic spine. Those never do last very long without them coming partially undone.

Lots of recipe variety, minimum effort. Delicious meat and vegetarian options. I leave the slow cooker on while sleeping at night or during the day while I am at work.

There are a lot of flavorful-sounding recipes in this book, and it goes far beyond the standard roast fare that makes up the bulk of so many other slow cooker recipe books. However, I was a little disappointed to see how many of the recipes called for prepared foods, such as jars of pesto, pasta sauce, salad dressing, and flavored cream cheeses. "Simple" cooking shouldn't mean that you use as many prepared, chemically-laden ingredients as possible.

More than just pot roast and chili...,

I think that whether a person likes this book will depend some on his/her expectations when beginning to use it, and upon his/her experience w/ other cookbooks for slow-cookers.
I checked this book out of the library a while back. I own a couple of slow cooker books that I don't like much, and wanted to 'try before I buy'. I agree with other reviewers' comments that most slow-cooker cookbooks are a little heavy on pot roast and chili. While both are represented in this book, too, I was pleasantly surprised to see that recipes for 'sides' and grain dishes are *far* more numerous than in the other slow cooker books I've seen (=a lot). I was also expecting to see far more prepared foods on the ingredient lists than there turned out to be. (The number is greater than '0' and far less than 'all'. I use 0.) I made the "Cumin & Coriander Pork" which is pork shoulder with cider vinegar, sour cream, onions, mushrooms, and some seasonings. I thought it was excellent; and it was a combination that I absolutely would not have invented on my own, even though in retrospect it seems like a no-brainer. I renewed the book once from the library -- and have not seen it on the shelf since I returned it. Since I'd have to wait weeks to check it out again, I am just going to buy a copy in order to try the other recipes. It's not expensive, so it will be easily worth the price to have such an extensive book as a source for new ideas -- and after that pork shoulder recipe I have high hopes for the quality of a significant number of the other recipes I read through while I had it. I'm definitely *not* a good enough cook that I can toss together a bunch of random food, cook it for like 12 hours, and be able to count on an edible result. Based on my experience with it thus far, I'll be glad of the help offered by this book. I give it '3 stars' for now because I haven't tried any of the other recipes. I may increase the number down the road.

Good recipes, but...,
This review is from: Simple Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens Cooking) (Paperback)
I read this book and was eager to try the recipes until I discovered that they were tailored for a 3-4 quart slow cooker. I have a 6-quart cooker, and did not find instructions to make the recipes in a larger cooker. Until I go out to buy a smaller cooker, I won't make the recipes.

I'm 60 years old and never had a slow cooker until a few months ago. This cookbook has my husband convinced that I've become a genius in the kitchen! I'm learning a lot by making various recipes, so that now I'm able to adapt some and invent some of my own! Yum!

I love this cookbook. What could be easier than throwing a few ingredients in a crock pot, turning it on and leaving it alone while you sleep or work! This cookbook has loads of recipes, tips and side dishes and is easy!

Don't buy this terrible book!,
This review is from: Simple Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens Cooking) (Paperback)
I had purchased this book about a year ago...and I have YET to make something edible from it! I have tried multiple chicken, beef, and vegetable dishes, and they were all awful! Last night, in fact, I made the Oriental Beef and Broccoli on page 163, and it BURNED. I know...I didn't think you COULD burn something in the crock pot without a serious effort to do just that...but it happened! I had it set for 8 hours on LOW, as the recipie states 8 to 10 hours on low, and 6 hours into the cooking process, I checked it... and the meat was burned! I was shocked! What a waste and a dissapointment! We ended up eating frozen pizza, and the book has ended up in the trash! My crock pot gets used at least once a week, so it wasn't that, and I double checked the recipie. It wasn't end user error....Better homes and Gardens just dosn't check their recipies any more! I am very dissapointed with this waste of paper they call a cookbook...and it's not the first time I have been dissapointed by Better Homes and Gardens product. Don't even get me started on the toaster oven I bought on their reccommendation.....They have gone to He** in a handbasket...Shape up, BH&G!! You are losing customers with your poor quality!!:(!
