Book Description

November 8, 2010 1439838453 978-1439838457 1

Detailing the role of senior management in achieving a successful transformation to organizational excellence, Simple Excellence: Organizing and Aligning the Management Team in a Lean Transformation charts a course of simplification through the complexity often associated with managing performance improvement initiatives. It spells out the roles of key individuals on the management team—including those from sales and marketing, human resources, purchasing/supply chain, information technology, finance, and engineering.

Maintaining a focus on the big picture, this book explains what value streams are and how to use them to structure your business so that all stakeholders are aligned with what matters most. It reduces constraint management to its most practical terms and lays out a sound approach to accounting that enables everyone to spend money where it adds value and stop spending where it doesn’t.

  • Drive your management team with dedicated allegience to the concept of  value enhancement
  • Propel your organization to higher performance through the employment of Lean culture and decision-making principles
  • Enact management structures needed to put new ways of thinking into play
  • Focus on the bottom line with the right performance metrics

Written by respected authorities with extensive experience helping leading organizations achieve Lean transformation, the text includes case studies from high-profile organizations recognized for operational excellence. Addressing human resources management practices, it explains how to manage the day-to-day operations and pricing factory capabilities for the greatest possible profits. It also discusses the ongoing process of strategic planning to help you move away from annual goal setting, toward a dynamic process of engaging the entire company in the effort to provide your customers with an improved sense of value.

Review

Simple Excellence is a quick and easy read that finally describes a simple, logical, way to conduct business. Simple principles like, focusing on the customer, eliminating waste, driving costs down, and managing cash are not complex enough for academics and the latest business book gurus to deal with. It’s reassuring to know that many of the principals espoused in this book are the same concepts we focus on here at Parker Hannifin. I will be making this book a must read for my staff. Simple Excellence helps to reinforce that what we are working on here at Parker Hannifin is the right stuff.
—Bob Barker, President, Parker Aerospace & Executive Vice President and Operating Officer, Parker Hannifin Corporation

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to Basics of Excellence - Simplicity March 9, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I found this book to be very interesting and useful. Messieurs Zak and Waddell have very compelling case for achieving excellence without sacrificing simplicity. Rather this is becoming a major challenge for some organizations to implement excellence with simplicity. "Simple Excellence" would be a good read for professionals who are getting into this field and wish to see a big picture map of operational excellence, all of its elements and how they are interconnected have been logically presented. The book would also serve seasoned professionals who have tried and implemented operational excellence but might be faced with unwanted complexities creeping into their systems quietly. Overall, the book is about a great topic with an unusual ease of reading.

Suggestion: Please think of developing an accompanying field book / implementation manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars The issue of lean and management addressed at last! December 9, 2010
By M and K
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
For a while now, I've suspected (ok, passionately believed), that management is the key to unlocking the power of operational excellence. The enigma, "How can we drive (and then sustain) lean/operational excellence?" gets the long awaited answer it deserves in as much detail as a book could hope (or want) to describe. It's a short read, but in the end, perhaps this is a strength as it presents the uncomplicated truth - financial accounting is killing business! Unfortunately, this will likely make it a bitter pill to swallow, as everything seems to use this awful model (including many accounting and MBA programs). Expect resistance to change that will come from the very leadership that will no longer be "expert" and who know how to "game" the system so well. At least the author directly notes this problem and passionately makes good arguments to attempt to overcome it. No matter how you read the pro/con list below, you must have this book, period.

Pro:
+ Elegant simplicity of concepts - presents the key to implementing lean, the real thing, at last!!
+ Begins with the "Why?" (i.e. "Section I: Thinking Differently")
+ Follows-up with "How?" (i.e. "Section II: Managing Differently")
+ Complete coverage of the factory, functional silo by silo, including topics on accounting (thank goodness!) and metrics
+ Very well written; made me want to race through it in one sitting
+ Provides plenty of cautions and tips to avoid many pitfalls

Con:
- Organization of "value streams," as presented, appear to me designed for piece-part operations with fast cycles. I have a hard time imagining concepts presented with models that require longer-cycle, custom, and capital intensive processes that must share multiple products (e.g. construction and biopharma come to mind). Not to say ideas aren't relevant; as written, these guys will just have a harder time, that's all
- I had difficulty on first read with Chapter 17... I couldn't immediately discern if the author was describing a do or don't until I was well into a page (or more likely I had an "off chapter"). I will re-read and revise my review accordingly.

Bottom line: You must have/study/preach this book. This is a game-changer, maybe THE game-changer lean/business book. Like many myths dispelled, truths which may appear radical at first later become simple common sense. Given the popularity of the basic "Western" approach to business, this book, through no fault of it's own, is probably going to be a tough pill for many to swallow. Just like, "the Earth is round" thinking was ridiculed and an unpopular, even a laughable view, I fear concepts within this book will take a long time to be accepted and given their due. Despite plenty of obvious evidence in business (and presented in this book) to the contrary, conventional wisdom appears much like the thinking that produced the myth, "the Earth is flat." Early adopters will have strong headwinds but a huge head start as well.
