I bought this book thinking it would contain RECIPES for families that were interested in the whole foods approach. It does seem to be a very interesting book, but really it is a nutrition book about conversion from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to the whole foods approach. I am re-selling this book because I have already been "converted", I was just looking for some new recipes. It was probably my fault for not reading the description of the book well enough, but I did want other potential buyers to beware.

As one who has written a number of books on foods and health, I can say that this book is an utter gem. Finally someone breaks the mold on "low-fat" and talks about real food for real people. These recipes are not only healthy but easy to make, and emphasize whole foods, quality protein, good fat and fiber. Adaptable to all kinds of diets and especially easy to use for families. Great job, belongs in every home!

Busy Moms, this is a must have!! Finally someone has taken the time to simplify healthy meals and cooking for busy families. This book breaks things down and makes preparing good-for-you meals simple, realistic, and easy to do. This is so much more than just a cookbook! I found what I was looking for - easy and healthy recipes - but what I also found was an enormous amount of advice about food prep and essential cooking techniques. There are some terrific chapters that "demystify" individual foods and spices, some of which I've never purchased because I just didn't know what to do with them! My favorite sections are the mix and match recipes which provide endless combinations of ingredients for soups, marinades, main dishes and desserts. I know the easier it is - the more likely we are to make it!
There's also a lot of comprehensive information about general healthy habits and easy things we can do to change our family's lifestyle. Nothing seemed to overwhelming or complicated - it's all about the basics. What I like most about this book is that it's written by moms who express understanding about how demanding our lives are and how overwhelming change can seem. It does not patronize or preach - the tone is humorous and friendly while at the same time straightforward and motivational.

The authors have managed to cram everything I've learned about nutrition over the past 20 years into one book and then added recipes as a bonus. I wish there was a way to distribute a copy to every mother in America!

It is somewhat rare to find a resource such as this that is not only filled with an outstanding knowledge base, but that also helps people find healthy doable choices for themselves and their families. In order to integrate healthier lifestyle choices in this hectic era, finding accesible solutions is critical. I tip my hat to these wonderful authors for their outstanding contribution to the well being of others. I would highly recommend this book to all of us- - frankly, don't we all eat every day and rely upon food nourishment to restore our bodies, minds and souls to keep us going?

This is a very well written book that gives a very nice background to the reason our country is facing an obesity epidemic.
With that said, if you are looking for a cook book it is a little disappointing. Most of the chapters are dedicated to not only identifying poor diet choices but lifestyle and habits that affect health as well. Only the last few chapters are dedicated to menu/recipes. The recipes are in the form of tables where you can mix and match foods with side items, etc. I have to admit that I haven't used the tables once since I purchased the book. I gave this book 4 stars because I think the authors are encouraging families to take charge of their health instead of passively accepting obesity as a genetic problem. Eating garbage and spending 10 hours of the day plopped in front of a TV and/or computer only leads to one thing -- chronic health problems that we are now seeing in 5 year olds. If you want to make some changes in your lifestyle but aren't quite sure how to do so, this is a great book!

This book is exactly what I was looking for!I wanted to get my family to eat better and this book tells you how! It gives you all the reasons why you should follow a better diet so you have facts to back up your choices. I LOVE this book! It also takes it more from a day by day approach and understands how you can't just change it all in a day but by making small healthier choices each day you are on your way to a healthier diet! Would definitely recommend!

What an incredible and life changing book! I thought I ate relatively healthy and knew a good amount about eating whole foods but I really learned so much in this book. I am a working mom of 2 little ones and it's really hard to cook healthy when your time is so limited. After reading this, I am truly motivated to make better choices and give my kids the foundation to make better choices for their growing years. I would recommend to anyone who wants to eat and live responsibly, not just eat healthy.
