A charming artist with an angelic voice, February 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Simple Gearle (Audio CD)
Stacey Earle is Steve Earle's little sister, but don't expect the music to be anything like his. She has a sweet, vulnerable sounding voice, a bit like Nanci Griffith but sweeter somehow. It is a record that creeps up on you and after a few listens becomes totally addictive. Stacey's songs are generally about broken hearts and such, but are exceptionally appealing. "Simple Gearle" is hard to classify, but wonderful all the same.

Sheer beauty, November 3, 2001

A wonderful, poignant, moving collection of songs, exquisitely performed. Each one is a masterpiece of understatement, and stays in the mind long after listening. Get it and enrich your life.

simply surprised!, November 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Simple Gearle (Audio CD)
I was won over by seeing Stacey and her husband Mark Stuart( a former Duke) live. I must admit that, while having heard of this recording, I'd never heard a single track and went to the show on the strength of the surname, but was quickly brought on board by the shear power of the harmonies and powerful voice that is Stacey's. Mark's guitar and vocal compliment her beautifully. Listening to this cd brings me back to the show; wonderful evening, cheers, mike

Beautiful singing, vivid songs, and energy galore. She's a must-see in concert, too.

Better than Steve - really interesting and a voice, October 3, 1999

This is a really interesting album. I thought it would be Steve Earle, but she is her own person, and her own very interesting vocal style - a great band as well!!

Beautiful noise . . ., September 14, 1999

I was fortunate enough to catch Stacey at the 1999 Bumbershoot festival. She blew us away so much that we went to see her a second time that night. Great vocals, great music, she is just a brilliantly talented artist. Buy this CD, you can't help but adore it - then catch her live! Fabulous!

Catch this "gearle" live!, August 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Simple Gearle (Audio CD)
Comparisons to Nanci Griffith are right on as this "gearle" delivers with the same kind of passion for her music that Nanci does. I had the pleasure of seeing her play at Newport Folk Festival this summer and she is just as good live. Catch her show when she comes to town - you won't be disappointed.

Honest, rich, DIY, and everything good about music, July 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Simple Gearle (Audio CD)
My favorite records are always the ones that grow on me, the ones that continue to surprise and reveal themselves over time. With so much bad music out there, and particularly bad albums, it's so great to find this one -- completely honest and full of life. Stacey has such a fantastic voice and a keen sense of how to convey her own experiences through a song. Forget everything you know about her brother -- the influence is negligable. To me she sounds like (and I apologize ahead of time) Jewel if Jewel actually had anything interesting to tell us -- in other words, a hundred times more intelligent and with EXPERIENCE. Comparisons to Gillian Welch don't quite cut it for me. Gillian writes from a much older sphere of influence. There's nothing bluegrass or Carter Family about Stacey Earle. Just good honest personal songwriting. Buy this.

Awesome, June 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Simple Gearle (Audio CD)
I know you're not supposed to use words like "awesome" to describe music that is so sparse and simple in instrumentation and arrangement, but it's absolutely accurate. Stacey is clearly a very talented songwriter -- I just discovered she (co)wrote "For Years," a wonderful song cut a few years back by Sammy Kershaw. And she has a sweet voice (much better than her brother's, IMHO) that is just right for her songs. Listen to this CD and be moved.

Move over Steve let this girl sing her troubles!, June 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Simple Gearle (Audio CD)
Actually, I was amazed how folk she is instead of country which is what I love about Nancy Griffith. This CD really has a lot of Heart in it and Stacey can really capture the moment with her voice and words. The accoustic flavor was beautiful too. It's a CD worth taking on those long summer drives and it can stick around for the fall and winter too to keep you company.
